Hawaii is a rabies-free state and wants to remain that way. If you?re moving to Hawaii with pets, this means you?re going to have to take several steps to prepare them for entrance into the state. If you arrive in Hawaii without the necessary documentation proving your pets don?t have rabies, they will be quarantined for up to four months, at your expense.

Harsh? Yes. But if you carefully follow the required steps outlined by Hawaii?s Department of Agriculture, you?ll be able to pick up your pets from the airport quarantine station right after getting your luggage at baggage claim, and you can take them home immediately.

Besides the Department of Agriculture requirements, you also need to take into consideration requirements that airlines have regarding pets. Careful preparation and planning is necessary for your pets? flight to Hawaii, as well.

There are a lot of steps to make sure you get right during the 6-12 months before your pets move to Hawaii, and certain steps are more time-sensitive than others. So I?ve taken all the requirements of the Department of Agriculture and major airlines that fly to Hawaii, and have prioritized them in this series of posts. I?ve also pointed out any critical details that need careful attention. If you follow these steps exactly, in the order given, you and your pets should get through baggage check-in and the quarantine station without any problem.

Before you do anything, first make sure you?re allowed to bring your pet into Hawaii at all. Download the Dept. of Agriculture?s full list of conditionally approved animals to make sure your pet is listed. Here are some (but not all) of the animals that are legal to bring to or own in Hawaii:

• All domesticated dogs (no hybrids, like a wolf-dog crossbreed)
• All domesticated cats (no hybrids, like a Bengal or Savannah)
• All domesticated rabbits
• All domesticated swine (like a pot-bellied pig)
• All domesticated horses
• All domesticated mice & rats
• All guinea pigs
• All chinchillas
• Some birds, including (but not limited to) canaries, budgerigars, lovebirds, cockatiels, and certain types of finches, parrots, and parakeets
• Some salamanders
• Some newts
• Some frogs
• Some turtles & tortoises
• Some fishes
• Some invertebrates (certain types of crabs, sea urchins, sea cucumbers, etc.)

And here are some of the animals found on the Dept. of Agriculture?s full list of prohibited animals, which are illegal to bring to or own in Hawaii:

• All undomesticated dogs (like dingoes) or hybrids (like a wolf-dog crossbreed)
• All undomesticated cats or bybrids (like Bengals and Savannahs)
• All undomesticated rabbits (like wild hares)
• All undomesticated swine (like wild boars)
• All undomesticated horses (like wild mustangs)
• All undomesticated mice & rats (like voles and lemmings)
• All ferrets
• All gerbils
• All hamsters
• All sugar gliders
• All flying foxes
• All squirrels
• All snakes
• Some birds, including (but not limited to) toucans and certain types of finches, parrots, and parakeets
• Some lizards, including (but not limited to) geckos, bearded dragon lizards, and gila monsters

• Some frogs, including (but not limited to) poison-dart frogs and Cuban treefrogs
• Some turtles & tortoises, including (but not limited to) snapping turtles
• Some fishes, including (but not limited to) piranhas and lion fishes
• Some invertebrates, including (but not limited to) hermit crabs and jellyfishes

For certain animals, the rules can get complicated: Some are legal only for research and exhibition, while others are legal for ?personal and commercial use.? (I?m not sure how ?personal use? differs from pet ownership). SC gears up for ?action? next week

ISLAMABAD ? After the calm brought to the troubled waters of the federation by SC?s flexible order in Establishment Secretary Sohail Ahmad?s matter, some quick fixes by the judiciary perceptibly in anticipation of a legislative onslaught by the government raised alarm bells.
While cancelling the benches in the Lahore and Karachi Registry Branches on Friday, Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry constituted six benches in the Principle Seat, Islamabad and directed all the judges to remain in federal capital during the next week. A special bench under the CJP has also been constituted to hear the Haj corruption case.
According to the cause list issued by the Supreme Court earlier in the day, there was one bench in Lahore and one in Karachi. Later the cause list was changed and the benches in Lahore and Karachi were cancelled. The six benches have been constituted to hear the cases after two weeks, during the period from January 3 to 7.
The sources said this has been done in view of the Parliament session, commencing from Monday (August 1). They said that the government is planning to bring in some legalisation to curb judiciary?s powers. The chief justice might be anticipating some such move by the government and he has therefore taken this step and asked all the judges to be present in Islamabad next week.
A 3-member bench led by CJP would hear the cases including breach in embankment during the floods, casualties in car race and sale and purchase of shares of British petroleum. A larger bench of SC led by Justice Mehmood Akhtar Siddiqui will take up PCO judges? contempt of court case for hearing. The other cases are Mukhtara Mai, privatisation of HBL, fake police encounters, constitutional petitions against NAB ordinance and 11 missing prisoners case.
As for the composition of the six benches, the first bench includes the CJ himself, Justice Muhammad Sair Ali and Justice Ghulam Rabbani. The second bench comprises Justice Javed Iqbal, Justice Raja Fayyaz Ahmed and Justice Anwer Zaheer Jamali. The third bench includes Justice Mian Shakirullah Jan, Justice Mahmood Akhtar Shahid Siddiqui and Justice Amir Hani Muslim. The fourth bench includes Justice Nasirul Mulk and Justice Jawwad S Khawaja, the fifth Shariat appellate bench (to sit till 11am) comprises Justice Tariq Parvez, Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa, Justice Dr Fida Muhammad Khan and Justice Dr Muhammad al Ghazali and the sixth bench (to sit after the fifth bench) comprises Justice Tariq Parvez, Justice Mian Saqib Nisar and Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa.

Although traditionally photography has been defined as the art of producing images on photosensitive surfaces, new technologies have blurred the lines that have defined photography over the last 150 years. New Image Frontiers: Defining The Future Of Photography takes a look at the past and present with the intent of predicting what future trends have in store for photography.

New Image Frontiers: Defining The Future Of Photography is derived from a number of industry resources and interviews with master photographers to pull together predictions of the direction of photography in the near future. This book is 272 pages and is divided into 27 chapters and six parts.

Part One, "Cameras and Lenses," are the basis to all photography. To envision the cameras and lenses of the future requires an understanding of latest technology trends. This part begins with a look at the photographic process and how we got here.

It then looks at the future of the three most prominent cameras: cell, point-and-shoot, and DSLRs as well as future developments on all fronts. Republicans put off vote on debt limit (AP)

WASHINGTON ? An intensive endgame at hand, Republican leaders abruptly postponed a vote Thursday night on legislation to avert a threatened government default and slice federal spending by nearly $1 trillion.

"The votes obviously were not there," conceded Rep. David Dreier, R-Calif., after Speaker John Boehner and the leadership had spent hours trying to corral the support of rebellious conservatives.

The decision created fresh turmoil as divided government struggled to head off an unprecedented default that would leave the Treasury without the funds needed to pay all its bills. Administration officials say Tuesday is the deadline for Congress to act.

President Barack Obama has threatened to veto the House bill, and the White House taunted Republicans as they struggled.

"Another day wasted while the clock ticks, now is the time to compromise so we can solve this problem and reduce the deficit," tweeted communications director Dan Pfeiffer.

Senate Democrats stood by to scuttle the bill ? if it ever got them ? as a way of forcing Republicans to accept changes sought by Obama.

The first sign of trouble for the House's supporters occurred after hours of routine debate, when the GOP leadership suddenly halted work on the measure.

As the evening slipped by Boehner summoned a string of Republican critics of the bill to his office. Asked what he and the speaker had talked about, Rep. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., said, "I think that's rather obvious. ... There's negotiations going on."

Based on public statements by lawmakers themselves, it appeared that five of some two dozen holdouts were from South Carolina. The state is also represented by Sen. Jim DeMint, who has solid ties to tea party groups and is a strong critic of compromising on the debt issue.

Others said conservatives wanted additional steps taken to try to ensure that a constitutional balanced-budget amendment would be sent to the states for ratification. As drafted, the legislation merely requires both houses of Congress to vote on the issue.

Another option under review was to wait for the Democratic-controlled Senate to pass legislation first, a reversal in Republican strategy that would increase Obama's leverage.

With the bill in limbo, a few first-term conservatives slipped into a small chapel a few paces down the hall from the Capitol Rotunda as they contemplated one of the most consequential votes of their careers.

Asked if he was seeking divine inspiration, Rep. Tim Scott, R-S.C., said that had already happened. "I was leaning no and now I am a no."

Many more congregated in the office of the chief GOP vote counter, California Rep. Kevin McCarthy, perhaps drawn to the 19 boxes of pizza that were rolled in. Boehner joined them but did not speak to reporters.

Earlier, Boehner had exuded optimism.

"Let's pass this bill and end the crisis," said the president's principal Republican antagonist in a new and contentious era of divided government. "It raises the debt limit and cuts government spending by a larger amount."

President Barack Obama has threatened to veto the measure, and in debate on the House floor, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida savaged it as a "Republican plan for default." She said the GOP hoped to "hold our economy hostage while forcing an ideological agenda" on the country.

Despite the sharp rhetoric, there were signs that gridlock might be giving way.

"Around here you've got to have deadlock before you have breakthrough," said Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D. "We're at that stage now."

Wall Street suffered fresh losses as Congress struggled to break its long gridlock. The Dow Jones industrial average was down for a fifth straight session.

The Treasury Department moved ahead with plans to hold its regular weekly auction of three-month and six-month securities on Monday. Yet officials offered no information on what steps would be taken if Congress failed to raise the nation's $14.3 trillion debt limit by the following day.

Administration officials have warned of potentially calamitous effects on the economy if the country defaults on its obligations ? a spike in interest rates, a plunge in stock markets and a tightening in the job market in a nation already struggling with unemployment over 9 percent.

White House press secretary Jay Carney outlined White House compromise terms: "significant deficit reduction, a mechanism by which Congress would take on the tough issues of tax reform and entitlement reform and a lifting of the debt ceiling beyond ... into 2013."

The last point loomed as the biggest obstacle.

The House bill cuts spending by $917 billion over a decade, principally by holding down costs for hundreds of government programs ranging from the Park Service to the Agriculture Department and foreign aid.

It also provides an immediate debt limit increase of $900 billion, which is less than half of the total needed to meet Obama's insistence that there be no replay of the current crisis in the heat of the 2012 election campaigns.

An additional $1.6 trillion in borrowing authority would be conditioned on passage of spending cuts of a greater amount.

The GOP bill's $917 billion in upfront spending cuts was trillions less than many tea party-backed rank-and-file Republican lawmakers wanted but a total that seemed nearly unimaginable when they took power in the House last winter with an agenda of reining in government. Numerous Republicans grumbled that the legislation didn't cut more deeply, and Boehner and the rest of the GOP leadership have spent their week cajoling reluctant conservatives to provide the votes needed to pass it.

Until evening, it appeared they were succeeding.

"It gives us a little bit of heartburn because it doesn't go big enough," said Rep. Sean Duffy, R-Wis., a first-term lawmaker who said he would vote for the bill as the best one available.

Another first-term Republican, Rep. Martha Roby of Alabama, said the bill was "far from perfect. But I don't have the luxury of writing the plan by myself, and neither does Speaker Boehner."

While the White House and Democrats objected to the House bill, they readied an alternative that contained similarities.

Drafted by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, it provides for $2.7 trillion in additional borrowing authority for the Treasury. It also calls for cuts of $2.2 trillion, including about $1 trillion in Pentagon savings that assume the end of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Even before the House voted, Reid served notice he would stage a vote to kill the legislation almost instantly.

"No Democrat will vote for a short-term Band-Aid that would put our economy at risk and put the nation back in this untenable situation a few short months from now," he said.

What exactly is a PRS-T1? Well, it's a new Sony Reader and it just so happens to have swung through the FCC with a WiFi n radio in tow. As you can see above, the regulatory label proudly proclaims this to be a "Digital Book Reader," though we could have guessed that from the PRS model number. What else do we know? Not much sadly. We're guess the T1 in the model name indicates that, whatever the panel's size, it'll be of the touchscreen variety. (Either that, or this is the tapenade colored model.) Despite Sony's official denials, looks like that rumored August launch for the company's latest e-ink devices may actually pan out.

Your parents have spent most of their lives working hard, trying to keep the family together, paying the mortgage to secure a home and putting food on the table. What better way than to repay them with good and very secure Senior Services. Moreover, professional care for the elderly should be taken into good consideration because, these services are for loved ones, and you want the best care and services around.

So before you actually seek the benefit of Senior Services for either you or someone close to you, whether it is at home, hospitals or government programs, here are a few tips when considering eldercare:

* Accreditation. Is it really endorsed by your local government unit? Is it registered under Social Services? As a consumer, you have every right to make sure that this is legit and that the service provider has is legit and has met all the requirements and specific standards.

Don?t limit this inquiry to agencies or programs. Seek this out when hiring personal nurses or caregivers. Always ask for accreditation, the proper paperwork, and permits and refer to your local government unit for the proper accreditation requirements.

* Level of Care. How much therapy does Granny really need? Should she be taken in as an in-patient, or would sessions be fine? What kind of program would really fit her? Would she enjoy community dining? Or would she rather prefer one-on-one counseling?

* What Type of Senior Services Would Fit Mom and Dad? Not all-elderly need physical therapy and definitely not all need daily counseling. What does Granny need? Does she need exercise? Or does she enjoy the children-and-elder bonding programs more? Does she need some to cook and shop for her?

* Facilities and Location. Of course, make sure that the place of care is elderly-friendly and can contribute to your parents? physical and mental health, and emotional wellbeing. Also, consider that at this stage of their lives, your folks don?t care for the hustle and bustle of the metropolis and prefer to concentrate on programs that will enrich their lives in the twilight years.

* Do They Really Need It? This is an important question people must ask before hiring someone to care for their loved ones. Is it actually time to get eldercare? This last question also fits perfectly with another question, ?Will the elderly be really happy?? These questions should guide you when making your choice of agency for senior services.

Thorough assessment is always essential when making decisions as well as the right Senior Services for you and your loved ones, because there are different needs for different people even when it comes to eldercare .

House backs Dem plan on endangered species (AP)

WASHINGTON ? In a rare defeat for Republican leadership, the House has backed a Democratic proposal allowing the Interior Department to continue adding new species to the Endangered Species Act.

A spending bill backed by GOP leaders would have only allowed species to be removed from the endangered list, rather than added. Republicans said the current program encourages lawsuits from advocacy groups that seek to have species listed as threatened or endangered, costing the government tens of millions of dollars.

Thirty-seven Republicans joined 187 Democrats Wednesday to reject the GOP. Rep. Norm Dicks of Washington state, who sponsored the amendment, called the GOP bill an overreach motivated by ideology, not deficit reduction. He said the measure had little chance of approval in the Democratic-controlled Senate.

hey everyone! after busy weekends shooting weddings we usually try to think of anything but on mondays, so here?s a little sump?n sump?n about some home improvement stuff we?ve done.

like a lot of you, we?re trying to make a difference in our world?by using products that help our environment, especially ones that don?t give a chuck norris roundhouse to our wallets. we?re not full-on enviro-gestapo but we are doing what we can to live a greener life.

we started about 6 years ago with an artificial lawn from SynLawn. since then, no watering, no weeding, no mowing, no gas/oil for lawn equipment, and lots more time for us. it still looks brand new.

next, we got a Rinnai tankless water heater. it saves energy by only heating water when it?s needed. as an added bonus, it never runs out of hot water,?even when we?ve had multiple showers and the washing machine going at the same time. INCONCEIVABLE!

?and then there was light. we had Solatube sky lights put in all the dark spaces of our home, including a bathroom in the center of our house that has no windows. i can?t begin to say how much we LOVE our sky lights! natural light cannot be beat. every day, from dawn to dusk, we don?t need to turn on a light in these rooms. after putting them in we definitely noticed a drop in our electricity bill. we have a total of 6 sky lights in the house and plan on adding a few more in the future.

after we finished our client meeting room, we knew we had to do something about our kitchen, especially after the big lumpia fire of 08 (see below). along with being together on trips or outside in the poolio, we spend a lot of our family time in and around the kitchen.

it was a sad kitchen, with it?s original 1970?s white tile counters and grody grout, but we finally did the project we?ve been dying to do for years! we?ve hated those old tile counter tops since like, forever, no scratch that, five-ever! we contemplated replacing them ourselves, but decided to just let the pros do it. we?re so glad we did.

here are our super sweet, grout-free, seamless, silky smooth, and easy to keep clean?

we finally did it and are so beyond thrilled with them. since they were going to be custom formed we added in a new composite granite sink that is super deep and doesn?t have that annoying wall in the middle of it. it?s just one ginormous sink, big enough to wash miniature canines in.

a little background on this photo. i was working about 30 minutes away from home. april and kim were cooking lumpia and heated up the oil a little too much. it got so hot that it reached it?s ignition point and burst into flames.

april, having not taken firefighting 101, threw water on the (oil) fire. that had the opposite effect of what she was hoping for. the small oil fire in the skillet instantly, and i mean instantly, turned into a billowing wall of flame that went up the wall and half way across the ceiling.

kim, not knowing what to do, began throwing water on the cabinets and frantically searching for something to extinguish the blaze.?it was at this point that the glass window on the microwave above our stove exploded, showering kim and the kitchen with hot bits of shattered glass. panic stricken and filled with adrenaline, kim continued running around, barefoot on the shattered glass (a la die hard). only later did she feel the cuts on her feet.

as all this was going on, rain, who was only in 3rd grade at the time, had done exactly what she was taught in school. the minute she saw the flames, she ran out of our house and called 911 from our neighbor?s home. the fire dept arrived within minutes. rain?s calm thinking and quick reaction saved our home and?may have very well saved the lives of kim and april.

this picture is filled with things we love, including our sweet new concrete counter tops, oh, and that kid on the couch.?notice the small solatube sky light in our kitchen. i wish we had done a bigger one in there, but this one was salvaged from another room in our house when we moved things around.

i don?t know if you can see the green wall in this shot but that is going to be our family canvas wall. we already have one of kim?s favorite shots, of me and rain, hanging on it. thanks roxy!

we had them put an industrial sealer on the concrete counter tops which not only makes them super shiny and beautiful, it also makes them impervious to spills and easy to clean. LOVE!

i think kim?s favorite part of this whole project might be our new restaurant style faucet and black composite granite sink from a company called Franke. it is, how you say? sweet.

we found the perfect place to hang some of april?s art where we can enjoy it every day. these are a couple pen and watercolor creations she did for me last Christmas.

this is still one of our favorite pieces of april animation. we have it hanging in our office until we find an even better place for it.

another thing we did during this project was to widen the surface area of our island. the shots below show our old counter top on the left and our new one on the right. before, we barely had room for our plates, so we had to leave serving bowls on another counter or on the stove. also, the old counter top did not hang over the edge of the island, so when you sat there to eat you either had to be an amputee or you were racking you knees on the island. now we can belly up to the bar without sitting side saddle.

of course, the first thing we did once our new concrete counter tops were in was enjoy a good meal on the pavement.

next up on our list of home improvement projects is a solar heating system for our pool so we can swim through those brutal southern california winters and save energy.

Leadership isn`t something that we are born with, it isn`t genetic like the color of our eyes or hair, it is something that we learn. We have heard of somebody that has been referred to as a born leader, this is rubbish. There are many components that go towards making a great leader, and you many be lacking in one or two of them at the minute, but it is never to late to learn.

Confidence is key. If, from an early age, you are made to feel like you are special and can take on the world, you grow up believing this to be so. If, on the other hand, you are quite often ignored as a child and little praise comes your way, you will grow up thinking that you are inferior. This can have a far reaching and detrimental effect on the way you live your life. You will feel out of it in classroom discussions and have little self esteem. It`s quite easy to gain confidence and here are a few ideas you may like to try.

Despite lacking in confidence, we all have something that we KNOW we are good at. Use this as a starting block. If you are good at a sport or pastime, join a club or a team. This will build your confidence as others will appreciate your skills and give you praise that is long overdue. If you good academically, find an online group which specializes in your area. If you excel at words for example, join online tournaments and see how you go. Join in the forums and chat with other with the same interests. This will improve you social circle and relieve some of the shyness that those with a self confidence crisis inevitably feel. The point of this exercise is that if you can realize your potential in one area of your life, you can realize it in others.

When it comes to work, it can be incredibly frustrating to see people with less experience getting those promotions simply because they make themselves heard. Yes, they will obviously have the skills to do the job, but you have to! Getting yourself noticed at work can be difficult if you`ve always just blended in with the furniture, but you need to let your talents be known. Next time you do a piece of work you are proud of, ask for a word with your boss in private and show them what you have done. This many seem very daunting, but they are human, and every boss needs to know what their employees are capable of. If you are nervous, practice what you want to say to family or in front of a mirror, but you don`t want to sound robotic or that it`s planned.

Everyone can be a leader; it just takes some longer than other to realize that they have the qualities required. By taking one step at a time, you too can realize your potential, and the fact that you`ve worked harder for it van make you a great leader as opposed to just a good one. ?Six Months in India ? Yoga in its Original Context ? is written by Vik Vad, who teaches yoga in Austin, Texas in the US. Six Months is a blog-to-book conversion and retains its journal-like writing format. Vad, an Indian brought up in the US, comes to India to discover his roots and to learn about yoga from the place of its origin and blogs/writes about his time in India.

In this neat, professional-looking book, he details the Hindu customs he encounters, the culture, the filth as well as the beauty of India as he sees it, in his decidedly American way. He travels to different parts of India including Chennai (south), Nasik (west) and Agra (north) and visits cities, villages, temples and ashrams.

The author writes in such a casual, conversational manner that you can almost hear him talking.? It is a very personal book with Vad?s opinions colouring the entire tome, but one does discover some interesting information (about gods, mantra, visiting various temples, and so on). It would have been a better work if the author had compiled the content keeping in mind a readership and organised the content to flow better.

On the one hand he shows a strong hunger and respect for gods and goddesses and then, there?s a personal domestication of the gods: ?Shiva?s actually a wandering yoga dude that does whatever he wants.? (Note the colloquial American ?that? while referring to a person.)

He stays at the Aurobindo Ashram and recommends it thus: ?The ashram seems to kind of be run by senior citizens, these people are like parents or something, but at least there?s discipline here, it?s definitely not a bunch of partying foreigners like some ashrams are.?

Sometimes the author writes in a juvenile fashion. He says ?Fuck India!? when he is upset about an infected ear piercing. He then blames Indians for India?s poverty and rants about the filth and the power cuts, arranged marriages, the works. After all this, he says that now he has got all this out, he can be calm and sensible once more.

Vik Vad hates the acronym ABCD (American Born Confused Desi) but Vad is baffled by India: ?It?s not that people in India are unhappy, though, or that this is really some bad place or something. If that were the case, I?d leave tomorrow and come back home. Indians are actually quite happy on the whole, in fact sometimes I think they?re actually generally happier than we are, somehow.? There is that tone of surprise, as you can see, that such a place and people can be touched by something as positive and profound as happiness.

Also, for a yoga practitioner who came to discover his Indian (Hindu) roots, he says towards the end of the book that if he could make a choice for his next birth, he?d pick the US for his birthplace and Christianity as his religion. Oh, well. But the book is a fun read, even funny in parts (?When you spend a lot of time walking near the road, at the end of the day you blow these nasty black boogers out of your nose?).

He gets sentimental about India once he returns to the US, however, and swears he will remember everyone and the kindness they showed him with gratitude.

Focal symptoms include: hearing problems such as ringing or buzzing sounds or hearing loss, decreased muscle control, lack of coordination, decreased sensation, weakness or paralysis, difficulty with walking or speech, balance problems, or double vision.

Nausea and Vomiting

As with headaches, these are non-focal, which means that most people who have nausea and vomiting do NOT have a brain tumor. Nausea and/ or vomiting is more likely to result in a brain tumor if it is accompanied by the other symptoms associated with a brain tumor.

Behavioral and cognitive problems

Many individuals havebehavioral and cognitive changes, such as: problems with recent memory, inability to concentrate or finding the right words, acting out ? no patience or tolerance, and loss of inhibitions ? saying or doing things that are not appropriate for the situation.If you find yourself developing any of these symptoms, feel free to consult your doctor and explain that you feel that you are experiences reactions related to a brain tumor.
