MAIDUGURI, Nigeria ? A Nigerian official says three people were killed when armed fighters clashed with security forces in the country's restive northeast.
Joint Security Task Force spokesman Lt. Col. Hassan Mohammed said Saturday that seven civilians were also wounded in Friday's clash in the city of Biu. He says a state legislator was among the wounded.
Mohammed says the three killed were all civilians.
Mohammed also says that the gunmen were not members of a local radical Muslim sect which has been blamed for similar attacks in northeast Nigeria. He says "armed miscreants" from the area are responsible and have attacked his forces before with "no justifiable cause."
