ISTE Career Center: Communications/Editorial jobs, Non-Profit jobs ...

Typically Requires: Bachelor?s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or related field, or equivalent. Strong written communication, social media, and technology skills.

Desired: Three years of experience in a public relations agency, corporate PR department, or nonprofit PR, communications, or marketing environment is preferred. Experience in planning, integrating, and executing social media strategies is preferred. Knowledge or experience in the field of education. Fluency in a second language and/or multinational experience.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities - This position requires:

Media operations: Knowledge of traditional media operations including broadcast, cable, newspapers, and magazines. Knowledge of online media operations, policies, and practices including websites, blogs, social networking sites and other new or emerging technology that is impacting and/or changing the way effective public or media relations and communications is conducted.

Technology: Requires strong knowledge of technology and its applications in a hands-on learning environment, technology skills (word-processing, spreadsheets, presentations, databases, Web), the ability to work comfortably in a technology-rich environment, the ability to identify and employ new technology to achieve public relations, communications, and branding goals and the ability to gauge how current trends are developing.

Public relations and communications methods: Experience implementing traditional PR tactics, particularly in integrated campaigns involving social media. Experience planning and implementing online PR tactics including blogging, tweeting, online forums, developing viral strategies, and maximizing campaign effectiveness through social networking and user generated content sites Research skills: Knowledge and ability to use research and monitoring tools for both social media and traditional media.

Analytical skills: Skills and experience assessing and developing processes and practices, acting as a resource for complex issues. Ability to synthesize and evaluate large quantities of information and data from multiple sources.

Communications: Demonstrates the ability to express ideas, thought and concepts clearly in writing or verbally using correct and appropriate grammar, organization and structure. Ability to use writing and editing skills in a variety of formats such as news, features, web, and blogs. Knowledgeable in AP and Chicago style as well as styles associated with social media.

Results Focus: Prioritizes tasks effectively; takes initiative; seeks efficiencies; overcomes obstacles; sets goals and aligns them appropriately to ISTE?s goals; uses resources effectively (human, financial, and environmental); holds self and others accountable for results; and plans for, contributes to, and/or manages budgets in keeping with ISTE priorities to achieve results.

Physical and Environmental Elements This is primarily a sedentary office classification. Employees work in an office with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances.

Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter and retrieve data using a computer keyboard, typewriter keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment. The position occasionally bends, stoops, reaches, pushes and pulls drawers to retrieve and file information and lifts and carries reports and records that typically weigh less than 20 pounds.

Some business travel is required which includes both air and land transportation. It may be necessary to handle personal luggage and operate a motor vehicle. The position must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds when preparing for a conference, meeting or exhibition. Specifically, attendance at ISTE conference(s) may be required. Conference responsibilities require the ability to travel and work long days, moving throughout large convention centers.
