Captain of Crunch: U.S. Nuclear Stockpile Watchdog Boasts Fastest Supercomputer in the West-or Anywhere Else, for That Matter

IBM Blue Gene/Q supercomputerThe U.S. Department of Energy supercomputer standing watch over the nation?s nuclear arsenal was crowned the world?s fastest supercomputer Monday at the 2012 International Supercomputing Conference in Hamburg, Germany. The ascension of Sequoia?run by the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA)?on the TOP500 list of the supercomputers marks the first time since November 2009 that a U.S. system has reached the global performance pinnacle.

In the two decades since the U.S. first declared a moratorium on nuclear weapons testing, it has relied on computers to track the integrity, effectiveness and safety of its stockpile. Sequoia?an IBM BlueGene/Q system with more than 1.5 million processing cores installed at the Energy Department?s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California?bested the competition by operating at 16.3 petaflops per second, or more than 16 quadrillion floating-point operations per second. The supercomputer enables NNSA?s Advanced Simulation and Computing program to study weapons performance, in particular hydrodynamics and properties of materials at extreme pressures and temperatures.

Sequoia?s performance knocked Fujitsu?s ?K Computer? at the RIKEN Advanced Institute for Computational Science in Kobe, Japan, to second place after the latter had held the pole position for the past two lists, which have been compiled twice annually since June 1993. K Computer registered 10.5 petaflops per second using 705,024 processing cores. RIKEN conducts research in a number of areas, including physics, chemistry, biology, medical science, engineering and computational science. In addition to being 55 percent faster than K Computer, Sequoia is also 150 percent more energy efficient.

Argonne National Laboratory?s Mira supercomputer, also an IBM BlueGene/Q system, debuted in the TOP500?s third spot with about 8.2 petaflops per second using more than 786,000 cores. The other top 10 U.S. system is the upgraded Jaguar at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, which was the top U.S. system on the previous list and now sits in the number-six slot on the current tally. In all, four of the top 10 supercomputers are IBM Blue Gene/Q systems.

The TOP500?compiled by Hans Meuer of the University of Mannheim, Germany, Erich Strohmaier and Horst Simon of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and Jack Dongarra of the University of Tennessee Knoxville?lists the 500 most powerful commercially available computer systems. Supercomputing technology, often used by scientists to crunch massively large numbers and run complex simulations, has advanced markedly in recent months. Whereas the total performance of all the systems on the list was 74.2 petaflops per second in November 2011, the most recent list boasted a combined performance of 123.4 petaflops per second.

Dark Are The Last Days

It is the far future and demons have invaded the earth from the outer dark. Much of the planet has been laid to waste but a handful of great cities still stand strong against the demon onslaught, helped by the priests of the Melchizidine order.

Greek exit polls: Top 2 parties in a dead heat

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? The two top contenders in an election crucial for Greece, Europe and the world were in a dead heat Sunday, exit polls showed, with Greek voters apparently polarized over the harsh austerity measures demanded by international bailouts.

As central banks stood ready to intervene in case of financial turmoil, Greece held its second national election in just six weeks to try to select a new government after an inconclusive ballot on May 6. The outcome of Sunday's vote could determine whether Greece is forced to leave the joint euro currency, a move that could drag down other European countries and have potentially catastrophic consequences for the global economy.

An exit poll carried out by five polling companies for Greece's major television channels projected the conservative New Democracy party as coming in with between 27.5 and 30.5 percent of the vote, with the anti-bailout radical left Syriza party at between 27 and 30 percent.

Another exit poll carried out for a separate TV station projected Syriza as possibly being marginally ahead, at between 25 and 31 percent compared to New Democracy's 25 to 30 percent.

Neither party will have enough seats in the 300-member Parliament to form a government, meaning talks on forming a coalition government will almost certainly begin Monday.

The two parties vying to win have starkly different views about what to do about the ?240 billion ($300 billion) in bailout loans that Greece has been given by international lenders.

Syriza head Alexis Tsipras, a 37-year-old former student activist, has vowed to cancel the terms of Greece's international bailout deal and repeal its austerity measures ? a move many think will force Greece to leave the 17-nation eurozone.

New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras says his top priority is to stay in the euro but has promised to renegotiate some terms of the bailout.

Whichever party comes first in Sunday's vote gets a bonus of 50 seats in Parliament.

Greece has been dependent on rescue loans since May 2010, after sky-high borrowing rates left it locked out of the international markets following years of profligate spending and falsifying financial data. The spending cuts made in return have left the country mired in a fifth year of recession, with unemployment spiraling to above 22 percent and tens of thousands of businesses shutting down.

There are no rules, however, governing a country's exit from the eurozone, and a Greek exit could spark a panic that other debt-strapped European nations ? Portugal, Ireland, Spain and Italy? might also have to leave.

That domino scenario ? known in economic terms as contagion ? could engulf the euro, causing a global financial panic not unlike the one that gripped the world in 2008 after the investment firm Lehman Brothers failed in the U.S.

The vote also came after a difficult week for Spain and Italy, which saw their borrowing costs soar. Tens of thousands of Italian workers rallied Saturday in Rome to protest pension cuts, tax hikes and labor reforms.

Tsipras, has vowed to rip up Greece's bailout agreements and repeal the austerity measures, which have included deep spending cuts on everything from health care to education and infrastructure, as well as tax hikes and reductions of salaries and pensions.

But his pledges, which include canceling planned privatizations, nationalizing banks and rolling back cuts to minimum wages and pensions, have horrified European leaders, as well as many Greeks. Tsipras' opponents argue that the inexperienced young politician is out of touch with reality, and that his policies will force the country out of the euro and lead to poverty for years to come.

Virtually unknown outside of Greece four months ago, Tsipras and his party shot to prominence in the May 6 vote, where he came a surprise second and quadrupled his support since the 2009 election.

Journalists and television news crews from across the world jostled for space to see Tsipras vote Sunday in Athens.

"We have beaten fear. Today we open a road to hope," Tspiras said, adding that he was confident of victory. "Today we open a road to a better tomorrow, with our people united, dignified and proud. In a Greece of social justice and prosperity, an equal member of a Europe that is changing."

The young left-wing leader has accused his rivals of attempting to terrorize the population by casting him as the man who will ruin the country. He insists he will keep Greece within the euro ? something that opinion polls have shown about 80 percent of Greeks want ? but European leaders have made it clear there is no room for Greece to reject the bailout and stay in the eurozone.

Samaras, meanwhile, has cast Sunday's choice as one between the euro and returning to the drachma. He has vowed to renegotiate some of the bailout's harsher terms but insists the top priority is for the country to remain in Europe's joint currency.

"Today the Greek people speak. Tomorrow a new era for Greece begins," Samaras said after voting in southern Greece.

Separately, Greek police were investigating the discovery Sunday of two unexploded hand grenades outside private Skai television station on the outskirts of Athens. Greek government spokesman Demetris Tsiodras denounced the action as an attempt to spoil the smooth running of the elections.

Police also said they have notified Twitter about a forged message purportedly sent out by Greece's Communist Party urging voters to cast their ballots for Syriza.

Strong winds in the Greek archipelago also forced the cancellation of some ferry routes Sunday, raising doubts about whether some voters would be able to get to island polling stations.

Calif jury awards $28M in Jehovah's sex abuse case

(AP) ? A Northern California jury has awarded $28 million in damages to a woman who said the Jehovah's Witnesses allowed an adult member of a Fremont church to molest her when she was a child in the mid-1990s.

Alameda County jurors awarded $7 million in compensatory damages on Wednesday and another $21 million in punitive damages on Thursday to Candace Conti, her attorney, Rick Simons said.

"This is the largest jury verdict for a single victim in a religious child abuse case in the country," Simons told The Associated Press.

In her lawsuit, Conti, now 26, said from 1995-1996, when she was 9 and 10 years old and a member of the North Fremont Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses, she was repeatedly molested by a fellow congregant, Jonathan Kendrick.

The Associated Press does not normally name victims of child sexual abuse but Conti has identified herself publicly to encourage other victims of sexual abuse to come forward, Simons said.

"Nothing can bring back my childhood," Conti told the Oakland Tribune. "But through this (verdict) and through, hopefully, a change in their policy, we can make something good come out of it."

Conti also claimed in her suit that the religion's national leaders formed a policy in 1989 that instructed the religion's elders to keep child sex abuse accusations secret. Congregation elders followed that policy when Kendrick was convicted in 1994 of misdemeanor child molestation in Alameda County, according to Simons.

Kendrick was never criminally charged in the case involving Conti, but besides the 1994 conviction, he was later convicted in 2004 of lewd or lascivious acts with a child, records show.

Kendrick, 58, now lives in Oakley, Calif., according to California's sex offender registry. A message left with a person answering the phone at his home was not immediately returned.

Kendrick was ordered to pay 60 percent of the judgment, but Simons said there would be no attempt to collect any money from Kendrick, in part, because he would not be able to pay the judgment. The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York ? the organization overseeing the Jehovah's Witnesses ?would be responsible for 40 percent, Simons said.

Jim McCabe, an attorney for the congregation, said he planned to appeal the jury's decision.

"The Jehovah's Witnesses hate child abuse and believe it's a plague on humanity," McCabe told the Tribune. "Jonathan Kendrick was not a leader or a pastor, he was just a rank-and-file member. This is a tragic case where a member of a religious group has brought liability on the group for actions he alone may have taken."

95% Yellow Submarine

I don't mean to sound trite, but they should just rename this film "Drug Trip: The Movie" and be done with it. Seriously.Ok then, with that out of the way, I must say, this is a bit of a hard film to really rate or review. Obviously I'm gonna have to do just that, but it is a bit difficult for me.This fantasy centered around The Beatles going out to stop a bunch of creatures caleld Blue Meanies who have taken over a place called Pepperland combines the terrific music of The Beatles with really cool and unique art disrection and visual styles to create a film that is really just an otherworldlt experience. Just so you know, I didn't see this high, but I did have a couple of drinks. I really cn't say what would be the best way to experience this film. I leave that up to you. There's a story, but it's pretty much just a thin clothesline to hang some great tunes and trippy visuals on. This will probably not appeal to some people, but, I at least got something out of it, even if I don't truly know how I feel about this film-hence why my rating is mainly a formaility.I do think this should be seen though, because it is entertaining, and there's some wild stuff going on, even if it does get a bit too self indulgant with the psychedelia. At least there's the music and some subtle, dry humor to make the film more than just trippiness.

Update to Google+ YouTube app lets users make Hangout playlists

YouTube Google+

YouTube's Google+ app has been updated to let users put together playlists together over Hangouts. (YouTube / June 14, 2012)

June 14, 2012, 4:01 p.m.

YouTube and Google+ are starting to look a lot more alike, and now, they will play together more too.

The team behind YouTube announced Thursday afternoon that the service's Google+ app has received an update increasing the amount of things that users can do with YouTube videos inside Google+ hangouts.

The update to the Google+ YouTube app will let users put together playlists of YouTube videos within Google+ Hangouts. Previously, users could only go through YouTube videos one at a time within Hangouts.

The first obvious use for this new tool is crowd-sourcing music playlists. Rather than let a computer choose everything you rock out to like on Pandora or having to choose every last song like on Spotify or Grooveshark, with the new Google+ YouTube app update, you could split the responsibility of choosing songs among your group of friends.

"Start a Hangout, have everyone load the YouTube app at the top of the screen, and start adding videos," said Ullas Gargi, a YouTube software engineer in a blog post. "It?s like your own VIP table at the world?s coolest YouTube party."

The update to the app comes the same day as screenshots emerged of a YouTube front page redesign that is being tested by Google. The look being tested makes YouTube look a lot like Google+, although that doesn't necessarily mean the two are becoming more integrated.

The updated Google+ YouTube app will be available in 60 languages.
