What program should I use for accounting in my small business ...

by Small Business Accounting Software on July 16, 2011

I know Peachtree/Quickbooks or something
but what does it really do?

Is accounting only to help out the owner? or is there legal stuff included?

Also, what's the difference between what the cash register monitors and what i use the accounting program for?

Shifting Demographics and the (Charlottesville) Housing Market ...

The buyers who used to be for one to four years ? are gone.

Charlottesville has always been a bit of a transient market, and this recession is creating some significant shifts in the demographics of buyers, shift I?m trying to figure out now rather than later.

- Younger people are choosing to rent rather than buy, as they have neither the desire nor job stability to to purchase. Put simply, many don?t know where they?ll be in two years and don?t want to be saddled with a house.

- I?d wager a large percentage of the population has been turned off of homeownership, for all the obvious reasons.

- ?Active adult? communities in Charlottesville are few and far between, but The Lodge in Old Trail (in Crozet) looks like it may be poised for success.

- What will the landscape look like in thirty or forty years when these now new developments (I am reluctant to call some of these new incarnations ?neighborhoods? just yet) start to experience their own turnover? Who will buy these houses?Diana Olick ponders much of what we?ve been seeing in the Charlottesville MSA:

We?ve also talked a lot about the surge in renting; we?ve blamed it on the housing crash, fear of buying into a depreciating market and the tight credit conditions that are pricing many potential buyers out.

Perhaps there?s more to it than that as well. Perhaps with fewer large family households and less desire for a big space, smaller, full-service rental apartments are more desirable to a growing segment of the population.

?Family households are more likely to stretch for size over location. Non-family households are more likely to value location?proximity to work, entertainment, etc.?and then size. They are less willing to commute than a family household,? noted Porter.

We also have to look at the growing population of Americans who intend to ?age in place,? that is, the baby boomers who are moving out of the big family homes but not into what we used to call ?retirement homes.?

And she closes with the question I?ve been wondering for years:

When you couple that shift with a much-changed mortgage market, one that prices so many more Americans out of larger, move-up homes, you have to be concerned about what happens to the stock of larger homes, old and new. Do we see huge price reductions as demand falters?

An enterprising real estate developer will be making plans. Now.

What happens after the Baby Boomers?

What happens after the baby boomers? Take Two

Younger sister with stage 4 breast cancer?

Posted by admin on July 15th, 2011

Other people asked questions on various topics, and are still
waiting for answer. Would be great if you can take a sec and
answer them

Younger sister with stage 4 breast cancer? My younger sister recently underwent a bilateral mastectomy for the breast cancer she has been battling for almost a year. She was stage 4 at the initial diagnosis and is 21 years old. I am 27. I have been having a lot of guilt issues lately. I do all that I can for her but still feel that it isn?t enough. I feel guilt because my fiance and I are having a child. I feel like I cannot truly be happy knowing that she is going through so much. I cry and our family cries all the time when we aren?t around her. She has insisted on living life on her terms! Which I so admire. She lives with her fiance and works part-time as a graphic designer. I just never knew how strong my little sister is! I never knew how tough! I am just sickened by what this disease can do and how difficult it is to handle when it sneaks up on a young woman. Why isn?t there more awareness for young women? Why hasn?t a cure been found? Why is our health-care system so screwed? What can I do for her to show her how much she really means to me without bombarding her? What gifts? What to say? What encouragement? People fall back on religion during times like these and say that G-d won?t give you anymore than you can handle or that He works in mysterious ways?I just don?t see the reason to any of this. Can you imagine being 21 and breastless and not knowing if you will ever bear children or live normally or for how long? I love her so much! And it is tearing our family apart. Any advice? Words of wisdom to those who have been through it? I just have so much guilt and don?t know how to function normally when I am not around her?we haven?t been give a prognosis at all and I am full of hope that we are soon going to find a cure for cancer. I F*#CKING hate cancer. PS: is there any help for student loans for a person diagnosed with stage 4 cancer? I want to help alleviate some of her worries at least?

-AiDYN[[9.26.08]]
My father has stage four lung cancer. I know how you feel. Cancer is so sh!tty.
She?s going through a lot right now. But you should try to treat her normally as best as you can and stay positive! Don?t act like she?s on her deathbed, or she?ll start to think she is and might not survive the fight. Make sure she knows how much everybody loves her, and that you?ll help her in any way possible. Take her out to dinner because once she starts chemo, if that?s what they decide to do, she won?t feel like eating too much. Buy her a pair of slippers and a nice robe, that?s what my dad lounges around in these days. Get her a cute little teddy bear. Offer to go to appointments with her, and educate yourself on everything breast cancer. Always, always be a shoulder to cry on when she needs it. Maybe you could turn your helplessness into helping other women get awareness?

As for her student loans, the American Cancer Society helps my parents pay their bills. They might help with the loans. The website is below, and worth checking out at any rate.

Learn about your sister?s condition, treatment options, and prognosis. Your family has a tough road ahead and information is your best tool. Your sister?s oncologist is the best person to provide answers. Attached below is a link to the Merck Manual?s chapter on breast cancer. It is an authoritative guide to the illness.

Your sister needs to think about her health insurance status, as expenses will become quite substantial. If she does not have sufficient health insurance coverage, then now is the time to apply for Medicaid or other government programs. Contact your state?s Department of Heath and/or talk with her hospital?s billing department to get pointed in the right direction.

The American Cancer Society is a wonderful resource for just about everything now impacting your sister. They have excellent information on their website and offer a variety of programs. Gilda?s Club, named after the late comedian Gilda Radner, is a great support network for cancer patients. (links below)

Federal student loans based on Credit Rating? | Finance Talking Hub

Do the federal student loans get approved based on your credit rating? mine is shot over 800$ because I got a credit card at 18 and was ridiculously stupid with payments.

I live in Canada btw.

When you apply for student loans, they will do a credit check on you. if you fail the credit check, then the only way you can get federal (or provincial) loans is to appeal, which is a pain in the butt.

But you may not fail the credit check. These are the criteria:
you must have at least 3 accounts that have a combined value of over $1000 that are more than 90 days in arrears in the last 3 years.

So if you just have 1 delinquent credit card, you are okay. if you have a credit card, and an overdue cell phone and something in the collection agency but the combined value is under $1000 then you are okay. you have to meet ALL of the criteria to fail the credit check.

I know Sallie Mae checks credit for student loans but I've heard that other federal programs don't. I'm trying to figure the same thing out and upon the research I've done, most don't. I would try and apply for all grants and federal loans, I mean all they can say to us is no!

Stafford loans do not do a credit check. I don't think you will be eligible though unless you are an American citizen. To apply, you have to fill out the FAFSA at fafsa.ed.gov

Citigroup profit jumps 24 percent, beats forecasts (Reuters)

NEW YORK, July 15 (Reuters) ? Citigroup Inc's second-quarter profit jumped 24 percent as the bank lost less money than expected on bad U.S. loans.

Credit losses dropped 35 percent at the third-largest U.S. bank, which allowed it to dip into money previously set aside to cover bad loans. The bank's revenue from securities underwriting and merger advisory jumped 61 percent.

But many Citigroup businesses suffered. The bank's main continuing businesses, known as Citicorp, posted a 2 percent decline in net income. The only Citicorp business to boost profit was retail banking, which benefited mainly from lower credit costs in the United States.

"I think they still have a lot of work to do," said Matt McCormick, portfolio manager at Bahl & Gaynor Investment Counsel in Cincinnati.

On a conference call with investors, Citigroup Chief Executive Vikram Pandit cautioned that uncertainty in the global economy could weigh on the banking industry in the second half of this year, but said his bank is comfortable with broader macroeconomic trends.

Pandit has stabilized Citigroup by selling off bad assets, allowing the bank to repay the $45 billion of government bailout money it took during the financial crisis.

But he is now trying to show investors that Citigroup can move beyond recovery to growth. Second-quarter results were not heartening to some investors on that front. Overall revenue fell 7 percent from a year earlier. Operating expenses rose.

Citigroup reported net income of $3.34 billion, or $1.09 per share, bettering the 96-cent average estimate of analysts polled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. A year earlier it earned $2.7 billion, or 90 cents per share adjusted for a reverse stock split.

The results came a day after JPMorgan Chase & Co posted solid earnings, raising investor hopes for strength across the banking sector.

ELUSIVE 'NEW NORMAL'

Boosting business has been difficult this year for most U.S. banks, as weak fixed-income trading and market volatility have weighed heavily on results.

"Like everyone else, what we're looking to determine over the next several quarters is, what is the 'new normal' level for activity," Citigroup Chief Financial Officer John Gerspach said on a conference call with reporters.

"I'm not quite sure that we understand exactly where that is right now," he said in response to a question about possible trading layoffs.

Revenue at Citigroup's securities and banking unit, its commercial and investment bank, fell 8 percent, hurt by an 18 percent decline in fixed-income trading, to $3.033 billion.

That decline was partially offset by big increases in underwriting and merger advisory fees. Revenue for debt underwriting, equity underwriting and merger advisory rose 61 percent to $1.085 billion.

Falling income in commercial and investment banking pushed Citicorp's earnings down 2 percent to $3.66 billion. Losses in Citi Holdings, where the bank houses businesses and assets it is shedding, totaled $218 million.

Citigroup said overall revenue fell almost 7 percent to $20.6 billion, slightly better than the $19.9 billion expected by analysts.

Citi Holdings successfully slimmed down assets during the quarter by $29 billion, to $308 billion. At the beginning of 2009, Citi Holdings had $599 billion of assets.

Overall assets at Citigroup rose about 0.5 percent during the second quarter, to $1.956 billion, signalling that the bank is reducing its problem assets and growing its main continuing businesses.

Citigroup shares were off 8 cents to $38.94 in midday trading after rising as high as $40.38 in early dealings.

Google lifts Wall Street in otherwise rough week (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Google's blowout quarter led the Nasdaq higher on Friday but mounting uncertainty about the government's ability to reach a debt-reduction deal may keep investors at bay in the coming week.

The gains were a bright spot in a stretch dominated by selling that pushed the S&P 500 down in its worst week in five. Worries about U.S. and European government debt troubles put pressure on the market even as investors expect a batch of strong earnings next week.

For the week, the S&P 500 ended down 2.1 percent, while the Dow lost 1.4 percent and the Nasdaq fell 2.5 percent.

The stock market has largely ignored the acrimonious debate in Washington about raising the debt ceiling, which is necessary to avoid a default. But investors say it is dampening enthusiasm even as most express confidence a deal will be reached.

"We're drifting and waiting for clarity on all these different issues," said Fred Dickson, chief market strategist at D.A. Davidson & Co. in Lake Oswego, Oregon.

"Each day, the deck chairs get slightly rearranged," he said. "We saw the market react to President Obama's news conference where he continued to provide more detail on progress or lack of progress on negotiations. We saw the market selloff and then bounce back."

President Barack Obama held a White House news conference on Friday on the talks. Standard & Poor's warned late on Thursday that there is a one-in-two chance it could cut the United States' triple-A rating if an agreement is not reached soon.

Google Inc's (GOOG.O) earnings beat the most bullish forecasts late on Thursday, driving its stock up 13 percent to $597.62, making it the top gainer in the Nasdaq 100. The S&P information technology index (.GSPT) rose 1.6 percent.

The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) rose 42.61 points, or 0.34 percent, to end at 12,479.73. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (.SPX) gained 7.27 points, or 0.56 percent, to finish at 1,316.14. The Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) advanced 27.13 points, or 0.98 percent, to close at 2,789.80.

The CBOE Volatility Index (.VIX), Wall Street's fear gauge, ended down 6.1 percent at 19.53.

The European Banking Authority (EBA) said that of the 90 European banks tested, only eight had failed the "stress tests" performed to determine if they could withstand a long recession. Expectations were for up to 15 banks to fall short.

"The positive is, we're moving toward increased transparency," said Paul Ehrlichman, head of global equity at Global Currents in Wilmington, Delaware. "The bank stress tests, if they continue to do them, will reveal more about the weak parts of the banks' balance sheets."

Energy was a big mover on BHP Billiton's (BBL.N) (BLT.L) $12 billion offer to purchase Petrohawk (HK.N). Shares of Petrohawk jumped 62.5 percent to $38.17. The Select Sector Energy SPDR Fund (XLE.P), an exchange-traded fund, rose 2.6 percent to $76.86.

Consumer discretionary stocks were among the biggest drags after U.S. consumer sentiment hit its lowest level since March 2009. Home Depot (HD.N) fell 0.1 percent to $35.91.

Investor Carl Icahn's offer to buy Clorox Co (CLX.N) for $10.2 billion pushed the consumer products company's stock up 8.9 percent to $74.55.

Citigroup Inc (C.N) posted higher net income, helped by falling credit losses. But the stock dropped 1.6 percent to close at $38.38.

Volume was light, with about 7.12 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, the American Stock Exchange and Nasdaq, below last year's daily average of 8.47 billion.

About three stocks rose for every two that fell on both the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq.
