A Concerned Reader Points Out That There Are Jamaican And Haitian DREAMers, Too; We Instance Washington Sniper Malvo

Washington sniper Lee Boyd Malvo, DREAMER?A Concerned Reader [Email him]

Something I thought about during the Zimmerman trial was all of the "natural conservative" Caribbean blacks who would get Rubio's Amnesty and join the Florida Republican Party. (Not!)

Is Rachel Jeantel smarter than most Caribbean Black youth in Florida? [See Steve Sailer's post Rachel Jeantel's Testimony Shows America What 70 IQ Looks Like.] I would daresay, if you look at the Hispanic and Caribbean youth in America, that Jeantel would be close to the middle.

James Fulford writes: I won't argue about the relative IQ of Ms. Jeantel and the general population of the Caribbean (though I admit valedictorians will be few) because I've just of an even better example of the DREAM Act eligible "youngster" from the Caribbean: Washington sniper Lee Boyd Malvo.

Malvo is a perfect case for the DREAM Act: born in Kingston, Jamaica, he was brought to the US by his mother as as a "child"?I.E. a juvenile delinquent, age 16.

He attended an American high school in Bellingham, Washington, where fellow students said he was " studious, polite and well-dressed", the same kind of thing they're always saying about immigrant valedictorians. He's now 28, but that's well within the DREAM act parameters. The only problem is that he's serving ten life sentences for the thirteen people he and the late John Allan Muhammad murdered. But his lawyers will probably have fixed that soon?with good behavior, he may be out in time to vote for George P. Bush in 2020.

D.C. sniper Lee Boyd Malvo wants life sentences tossed

By ASSOCIATED PRESS | 6/27/13 10:44 AM EDT

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) ? Attorneys for Washington-area sniper Lee Boyd Malvo are asking federal judges in Virginia and Maryland to vacate his 10 life sentences.

In petitions filed earlier this week, attorneys argue a 2012 U.S. Supreme Court decision that blocked life sentences for juveniles should be applied retroactively to Malvo.

Malvo was four months shy of his 18th birthday when he and John Allen Muhammad gunned down 13 people in the Washington, D.C., area over a three-week period in October 2002. [More]

Prolexic Technologies Secures US$30 Million Series C Financing ...

Prolexic Technologies Secures US$30 Million Series C Financing Led by Trident Capital & Intel Capital

Prolexic Technologies announced it has closed a US$30 million Series C funding round led by new investors Trident Capital and Intel Capital. Prolexic?s existing shareholders include Kennet Partners, Camden Partners and Medina Capital.

This latest round of financing comes at a time when Prolexic?s year-over-year revenues have increased 65 percent, while remaining EBITDA positive.

Following the Series C investment, Trident Capital?s Managing Director Gustavo Alberelli will join Prolexic?s Board of Directors. ?For the past two years, I have seen companies and government agencies around the world repeatedly select Prolexic for DDoS protection, cementing the firm?s position as market leader,? said Alberelli. ?I?m excited to continue working with Prolexic management and providing Trident?s IT security expertise to help Prolexic continue its rapid expansion.?

The Series C financing comes in the aftermath of two of the largest DDoS attacks ever seen in the industry. So far in 2013, Prolexic has successfully mitigated the single largest attack in its 10-year history (167 Gigabits per second), as well as the world?s most powerful attack campaign (144 million packets per second). To keep pace with bigger, stronger and more sophisticated attacks, Prolexic will use the new funding to expand its worldwide scrubbing center footprint, increasing the capacity of its cloud-based DDoS mitigation platform beyond 1 Tbps, and to develop new cloud-based security services. Prolexic currently operates four scrubbing centers located in London, Hong Kong, San Jose and Ashburn, Va.

?We are pleased to partner with seasoned security investors like Trident Capital and Intel Capital,? said Scott Hammack, chief executive officer of Prolexic. ?With this additional funding, we will be able to accelerate a number of strategic initiatives as we continue to expand our portfolio of cloud-based products and industry-leading DDoS protection services.?

Mice Harmed by Low Dose of BPA, Not High

Baby mice exposed in the womb to low doses ? but not high doses ? of bisphenol A were fatter and had metabolic changes linked to obesity and diabetes, according to a new study published Thursday.

Building on previous studies that link the hormone-altering chemical to changes in body weight and glucose tolerance, the new research fuels an ongoing controversy over whether federal testing of chemicals is adequate to protect people from low doses.

?What?s scary is that we found effects at levels that the government not only says is safe, but that they don?t bother to test,? said Fredrick vom Saal, a University of Missouri, Columbia, professor and senior author of the study published in the journal Reproductive Toxicology.

Many of the effects were reported in the mice fed daily doses ? just during pregnancy ? that were one-tenth of the amount that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says is safe for daily exposure throughout life.

Used in polycarbonate plastics, canned food liners and some thermal receipts, BPA is found in almost everyone?s body. Some earlier studies have linked it to obesity and diabetes in people.

Vom Saal said low doses of BPA caused a ?deranged metabolism? in the offspring of the exposed pregnant mice, suggesting that ?a component of the obesity epidemic and other metabolic diseases can be due to chemical exposure during development, when your cells are being programmed.?

In the offspring mice, BPA was associated with weight gain, increased abdominal fat and eating, impaired glucose tolerance and increased hormones that regulate glucose and appetite. Those outcomes, however, only happened when mothers were fed daily doses at or below 5,000 micrograms of BPA per kilogram of body weight. That amount is the EPA?s ?no effects? level ? the daily amount that the agency has concluded would not cause any human effects.

Of the doses fed to the pregnant mice ? 5, 50, 500, 5,000 and 50,000 micrograms per kilogram ? 500 caused the most metabolic changes, vom Saal said. The number of fat cells doubled at that dose. No effects were seen at doses higher than 5,000.

The study adds to the controversy over a phenomenon called ?nonmonotonic dose response,? which means that hormone-like chemicals such as BPA sometimes do not act in a typical way; they can have health effects at low doses but no effects or different effects at high doses.

The EPA frequently evaluates the safety of chemicals with tests that expose lab animals to high doses, then extrapolating to lower doses that people and wildlife encounter.

In a report last year, 12 scientists, including vom Saal, criticized that decades old-strategy, saying it fails to detect health threats from low doses of hormone-like chemicals. Pete Myers, founder of Environmental Health News and chief scientist at Environmental Health Sciences, was the senior author of that report.

Last month, reacting to that report, the EPA defended its testing, concluding that current testing of hormone-altering chemicals is adequate for detecting low-dose effects that may jeopardize health.

In response to vom Saal?s new study, a spokesperson for the American Chemistry Council, which represents chemical companies, said the findings had not been replicated and it ?presents conclusions that are not supported by the findings of EPA?s recent extensive review of the state of the science on low dose exposures.?

Savage: Lock The Doors To Cooperstown: Baseball Writers Shouldn?t Be Allowed In Either

Despite their historic accomplishments, the voters of the Baseball Writers of America have not elected these players because of their alleged, admitted, or presumed use of performance enhancing drugs (PEDs). The moralistic rationale for their rejection is straightforward enough: the players who took steroids, HGH, or other PEDs were cheaters, and their behavior made a mockery of the records they broke and the great statistics they compiled. They betrayed the game of baseball, and so do not deserve to be enshrined in the hallowed halls of Cooperstown.

This argument of course ignores the use of other PEDs not that long ago (lots of records were set during an era when amphetamines were handed out in MLB clubhouses like M&M?s). More importantly, this moralizing ignores the context in which these players chose to juice.

As my Cubs season ticket?partner Brian Azzarello pointed out to me, if the voters? logic holds, then some other consequences should follow:

? * No baseball writer who covered baseball during the Steroids Era should be awarded the Taylor Spink Award.
? * No baseball broadcaster who worked on radio or TV during the Steroids Era should be awarded the Ford C. Frick Award.

...In short: writers and broadcasters helped to create the disease they now claim to cure by denying these players their rightful place in the Hall of Fame. But if the best players of the Steroids Era do not belong in Cooperstown because they betrayed the game, then neither do the scribes and mike men who covered that impure game.

And as long as we?re on our high horses here, no manager or general manager of an MLB team during the Steroids Era should be eligible for Hall of Fame induction either.

Yeah, I?m looking at you, Tony La Russa.

Study: Grants, scholarships top financial aid

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Parents are picking up less of their children's college costs while grants and scholarships now have the top role in paying the bills, according to a report released Tuesday by loan giant Sallie Mae.

Since the recession, more college-bound students have eliminated schools from their searches based on costs and have relied less on their parents once they get to campus, the report found. Worries such as tuition increases and job losses seem to have faded as the economy has improved, yet parents and students still make decisions on schools, majors and work schedules based on the price tag.

"We have moved into a post-recession reality in how people pay for college," said Sarah Ducich, Sallie Mae's senior vice president for public policy.

College spending was about $21,000 during 2012, down from a peak of $24,000 in 2010, according to the Sallie Mae-Ipsos Public Affairs report.

The annual survey of student financial aid found students earned about $6,300 in grants and scholarships to pay for college costs, taking the top spots from parents. Student loans were the third most common source to pick up the bill for courses, housing and books.

The average student borrowed $8,815 in federal loans.

The rate for those loans was the subject of debate in the Senate this week, as lawmakers consider a compromise that would offer some students lower rates for the next few years but would prescribe higher rates for future classes.

Last year, the average family turned to grants and scholarships to cover 30 percent of college costs. Parents' income and savings covered 27 percent of the bill and student borrowing covered 18 percent.

"Parents are willing to stretch themselves," Ducich said "It's not that they're willing to pay. It's that their income is not keeping up."

Parents' enthusiasm for college has not shriveled, though. The survey found 85 percent of parents saw college bills as an investment in their children's future.

"We're in a new normal where big ticket items like college, families will pay for them but won't stress about them too much," said Cliff Young, managing director at Ipsos.

One-fifth of parents added work hours to pay for college and half of students increased their work hours, too. The report found 57 percent of families said students were living at home or with relatives, up from 41 percent last year and 44 percent in 2011.

Among other strategies employed to deal with costs:

? One-fifth of students from low-income families chose to transfer to less expensive schools.

? About one-fifth of students also said they changed majors to fields that were expected to be more marketable upon graduation.

? In all, 67 percent of students and their families eliminated colleges at some stage during the application process because of costs, up from 58 percent in 2008.

"It forced them to adopt new behaviors of savings and ways to find nickels and dimes," Young said.

The tuition sticker price at public four-year colleges is up 27 percent beyond overall inflation over the last five years, according to the latest figures from a separate study from the College Board. This past year it rose nearly 5 percent to an average of $8,655 nationwide. Including room and board, the average sticker price at public colleges is now $17,860, and students pay on average $12,110. At private four-year colleges, the average full tuition price is now just under $40,000, with the average student paying $23,840.

What does that mean for the average college student?

About two-thirds of the national college class of 2011 had loan debt at graduation, and their debt averaged $26,600, according to the most recent figures from the California-based Institute for College Access and Success. That was an increase of about 5 percent from the class before them.

The Ipsos telephone poll was conducted between April 10 and May 9 with 1802 parents of 18 to 24-year-old undergraduate students and 800 undergraduate students aged 18 to 24. The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.

Russian Church Leader Claims Gay Marriage Will Bring On Apocalypse

Patriarch Kirill, Russia?s church leader is now claiming that recognition of gay marriage will bring us one step closer to the apocalypse.

This news isn?t very surprising considering Russia has been cracking down on gays and lesbians lately with ?harsh legislature,? according to the Huffington Post.

So far, President Putin has signed three anti-gay bills into law, and the Huffington Post reports that there are more to come.

RT stated the following:

?The Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill sees the recognition of same-sex unions by Western countries as a portent of doom. He called upon Russians to ensure that sin is never formalized by the rule of law.?

Kirill said on Sunday after the service in Red Square?s Kazan Cathedral:

?This is a very dangerous apocalyptic symptom, and we must do everything in our powers to ensure that sin is never sanctioned in Russia by state law, because that would mean that the nation has embarked on a path of self-destruction.?

Kirill asked Russians to help block the passage of marriage equality laws, stating, ?We face enormous temptations when countries start approving sin and codifying it into law in order to justify it.?

The Inquisitr previously reported on the Russian bill that banned the promotion of ?homosexual propaganda? to minors, making it a crime to spread information aimed at forming non- traditional sexual behavior among children, suggesting this behavior is attractive, and making a false statement about the socially equal nature of traditional and non-traditional relationship.

Putin also signed an overseas gay adoption ban into law that prohibits gay couples in foreign countries where gay marriage is legal from adopting Russian children.

Kirill continued on to ask people to pray for the future of the country to prevent ?the slavery of sin? that leads to the ?self-destruction of the nation?.

What do you think of Kirill, the Russian Church leader?s claim that gay marriage will bring on the apocalypse?

Eva Longoria: College Graduation Rates For Latinos Aren't Keeping Up With Demographic Changes

  • Longoria <a href="http://www.contactmusic.com/news/eva-keeps-in-touch-with-wendys-staff_1077508" target="_hplink">told Latina Magazine</a> about her teen years working at the fast food restaurant: "I loved it. And I still love them. They are an amazing organization. I still keep in touch with my manager from when I was 14. They are just great to me. I wanted to have a <em>quinceanera</em>, so I went to Wendy's to work to pay for my own <em>quinceanera</em>. I stayed. I paid for my cheerleading and everything through that. It was like whatever you want to do outside of school, you have to pay for it. I never had a car because I was always trying to save."

  • Longoria <a href="http://msnbc.msn.com/id/9580764/#.T1-icWK3BXN" target="_hplink">graduated</a> in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science degree in kinesiology from Texas A&M Univerisity-Kingsville and planned to become a sports trainer.

I was the only one with black hair and the only one with dark skin. All my sisters were light blondes with hazel eyes. They used to call me ugly duckling. Longoria tells Dateline's Stone Phillips: "People would literally walk up to my mom when we were little and they would go-- "Oh my god, your daughters are so beautiful-- and who's this?" I was skin and bones. I was clumsy. I was dark. I was ugly. So I think growing up, I didn't depend on looks or the superficiality of being pretty because I wasn't. I always knew that I'm gonna work have to work hard. Nothing's gonna be given to me. And I think that comes from my mom and dad."

  • Before she made it big with "Desperate Housewives," Longoria was on the daytime soap operas like "Berverly Hills 9012," "General Hospital ," <a href="http://www.people.com/people/eva_longoria/0,,,00.html" target="_hplink"> and "The Young and the Restless" for two years and says</a>, "It was, like, almost minimum wage. Her performance on the show turned Eva into an overnight star and a household name.

  • In an <a href="http://msnbc.msn.com/id/9580764/#.T1-e7GLLxeM " target="_hplink">interview with Dateline's Stone Phillips</a> in 2005, Longoria recalls her audition with the show's producer Marc Cherry: <blockquote>Marc Cherry asks, "So what did you think of the script?" like the whole thing. And I said, "Well I didn't read the script. I only read my part." And Marc Cherry goes, "I knew you were Gabrielle at that moment because it was such a Gabrielle thing to say."</blockquote>
