Bethenny Frankel and Husband: Not Hoppy Ever After?

Bethenny Frankel has admitted in the past that her marriage isn't perfect. (Poor Jason Hoppy and his cobweb-filled penis!)

But now In Touch Weekly is reporting the relationship is in serious trouble, with Hoppy recently storming out of the pair's New York City residence and checking in to the Cosmopolitan Hotel.

Bethenny Frankel and Jason Hoppy at Sea

“The fighting has gotten worse,” an insider says of the reality TV-based couple, citing Frankel's obsession with her looks and her fame as a cause of the contention. “Her energy has been nervous and neurotic. He can’t take it anymore, so he’s been doing everything on his own.”

Hoppy is just telling friends he's living elsewhere temporarily, however, and referencing renovation on the tandem's $5 million apartment as the reason why.

Bethenny and Jason have a 23-month old daughter named Brynn.

Home Improvements | A Bathtub's Secret Weapon

A dirty bathtub is the worst. Unlike a sink or even the floors, in order to clean a bathtub you have to get on your hands and knees ? but no more! Whoever said you have to get on your hands and knees to clean your tub must have liked torture. We?re going to get creative here and explain some no-knee tricks for cleaning your bathroom tub.

Scrubbing Tools

When we think about mopping we often think of floors, but why not let this great invention serve multiple purposes. Mops allow you to get those hard to reach sports without bending over. Use them to wash the floors, clean walls from floor to ceiling, and scrub your bathtub. Nowadays, mops are made specifically for the tub with rounded corners and tougher scrub pads. But you can buy just a regular sponge mop to clean your bathtub. Many sponge mops come with two sides: a rough sponge and a softer sponge. The floor shouldn?t have all the fun. Take the mop into the tub and get the job done.

Let it Soak (x2)

The Beatles were almost onto something with their 1970?s single ?Let It Be?. The key to getting your bathroom clean is to let it soak and then let it soak some more. You don?t need to use fancy cleaning products. You can actually use your kitchen sink soak designed to tackle grease. Put the soap into a spray bottle and spray the whole tub down and let it soak. Come back in an hour or so and wipe down with the sponge mop.

Avoid cleaning products with a bunch of chemicals in them, but if your tub is really dirty or you have hard water stains you may have to. If you do use chemicals, be sure to wear a face mask and protect your mouth and nose from breathing in the harsh fumes. Turn on the overhead fan and don?t let these products soak too long, as the chemicals make them more potent.

Bathtub Refinishing

If the mop trick doesn?t work for you may have to resort to the old fashioned hands and knees approach. Now if this doesn?t work, you will have to call a bathtub refinisher. Don?t replace your tub! A bathtub refinisher will be able to apply a no-spray bathtub refinishing product to your tub and restore its natural color and sleek shine. No-spray bathtub refinishing is a unique and eco-friendly alternative to typical spray bathtub refinishing methods.

Once your bathtub is clean, keep it that way with regular cleaning. Spray a non-toxic cleaner every time you finish a shower to help maintain upkeep. For more bathtub home improvement ideas and for more information on upgrading to a soaker tub check out this other My Home Improvement blog.

Expands social game portfolio with new anime-inspired fighting title

SAN JOSE, Calif., March 27, 2012 /PRNewswire/ ? Gaia Interactive, one of the world?s most active social gaming communities, today announced the official launch of Soul Crash ? an anime-inspired action role-playing game (RPG) on Facebook. Between battles, players can also buy new equipment and enchant weapons to assist in future combat. An online leaderboard and upcoming tournament system makes the gaming more fun by competing with friends and players worldwide to see who can stay on top.

?Soul Crash presents a unique game play that we haven?t yet seen on Facebook,? said Lex Chulki Choi, CEO, PlayPlus. ?We?re very happy that Gaia saw its potential and helped us develop it into the full, action role-playing social game that it is today.

Foxconn To Invest $1.6B In Sharp For Flat Panels, Maybe For The iPad? Maybe For Apple TV?

foxconnstoresApple has yet to make any statements about where and when we might ever see an Apple TV product to match the impact it has had in the smartphone and tablet markets. But news of an investment by its key manufacturing partner, Foxconn, could point to the confidence others have of what might be coming soon. Foxconn is investing a combined 133 billion yen ($1.6 billion) in TV maker Sharp Corporation and a flat-panel JV it has with Sony -- and it has added a commitment to buy up to 50 percent of all of Sharp's LCD panel output. The deal is the largest-ever by a Taiwanese manufacturer in a Japanese supplier and could be all the more bold, considering that just yesterday there was a report from iSuppli on how sales of flat-panel TVs were in decline and flattening out.

World News - Brits revel in gloom ahead of London Olympics, but ...

thewebweddingstore on ebay

This badge, which was put up for sale on eBay, gives an indication of the attitudes of some Britons ahead of the Olympics.

By Ian Johnston, msnbc.com

LONDON -- If?grumbling ever becomes an Olympic sport, the United Kingdom has to be a surefire bet for gold.

The level of complaints, fears and general discontent about the 30th Olympiad in London?this summer has reached fever pitch, moving?well-known commentator David Randall, of The Independent on Sunday newspaper, to write a column entitled "Come on, Britain! Stop moaning! It's the Olympics, for heaven's sake!"

Some fear too many people will come to London, causing a "perfect storm" of congestion on the roads -- so bad that lives could be endangered?-- along with congestion on the subways, and also on the Internet; others think that actually?fewer visitors than usual will come?because ordinary tourists will be put off,?so the games will provide?little or no boost to the city's economy.

Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber even predicted "a bloodbath of a summer" for London's theaters?after a slump in advance orders for tickets.

Then there has been a slew of?gripes about tickets for Olympic events, such as not being able to get them?unless you are a member of the super-rich, and?unnecessary secrecy about the ticketing process.

Some worry?London will get a bad name if visitors are ruthlessly gouged for every cent, by unscrupulous landlords, over-priced hotels?or expensive Olympic souvenirs, for example.

However, one of the main groups representing London taxis seemed somewhat put out?after it tried unsuccessfully to get approval to increase fares by a hefty 22 percent during the games.?Allowed only?a 5.3 percent raise, a drivers' representative suggested that many cabbies might decide not to show up for work.

Morris-dancing anarchists?
Other complaints include?the potential $17 billion cost?of the event to taxpayers, and that Scotland, some 500 miles to the north of London, will see little benefit from the presence of the Games in the U.K. capital.?

Labor unions?have also been threatening to go on strike during the games to protest the government's austerity measures.?

Darren Staples / Reuters, file

Morris dancers, similar to these Leicester Morrismen dancing in Newtown Linford in 2010, may stage flash mob-style protests after being left out of the opening ceremony, The Daily Mail reported. Morris dancing stretches back some 600 years, but its origins are obscure.

And, if all that wasn't enough, there's the fear of a large-scale terrorist attack, and other assorted threats --?of?varying degrees of seriousness?--?from solar storms, diseases spread by shaking hands, Morris-dancing anarchists,?and, cue the scary music, the "Illuminati."

Olympic housing crunch: London landlords evict tenants to gouge tourists

Any sports enthusiast looking forward to the spectacles of Usain Bolt on the track, LeBron James on the court and Alex Morgan on the soccer field might be somewhat discouraged by all this negativity.

'It's cathartic'
But Peter Catterall,?lecturer in history at Queen Mary, University of London and editor of the journal National Identities, told msnbc.com that this would be a "cultural misreading" of the current outbreak of moaning.

"I think it reflects, if you like, a national history," he said. "The national narrative is often about making the best of heroic defeat, like [the Second World War evacuation of] Dunkirk and so on. The national experience in Britain is not one that's tended to create a sense in which you can just 'seize that hill.'"

From Wimbledon to Wembley Stadium to The Dome, a look at the venues for the 2012 London Olympic Games.

"There's a tendency to think in terms of what could go wrong, rather than what could go right," he said. "It's a kind of low-level grumbling amongst people who are often quite good at grumbling. I think also people quite like grumbling, it's cathartic."

Testing for terror: Preparing for the unthinkable at London Olympics

Olympic?organizers may even have taken this into account in their planning.

"I do think in part the public authorities have been trying to get the moaning out of the way early,"?Catterall said, although he added that this "may well put off some visitors."

An age-old attitude?
This kind of attitude may go back at least as far as what was arguably the world's first international event for the masses, London's Great Exhibition of 1851.

It was essentially a trade fair showing off?the?best?products from across the world -- exhibitors included China, Persia (now Iran), the United States, India, Tunisia, Philippines and many European countries -- and?it attracted more than 6 million visitors during its five-month run.

Peter Macdiarmid / Getty Images

Will Brits start celebrating the Games when they actually begin? A man sits in the Atlas cafe in Leyton near the Olympic Park in London, England, on March 22, 2012.

However, in the run-up to the exhibition, Londoners expressed a string of complaints and worries that are notably similar to the current ones about the Olympics.

"I think there was a parallel in terms of all these fears," Michael Leapman, author of a book about the Great Exhibition, called?"The World for a Shilling," said.

The prospect of hordes of visitors sparked alarm about congestion -- and as it turned out there were some traffic jams of the horse-and-carriage variety -- and the spread of disease, Leapman told msnbc.com.

And while tickets could be bought for a shilling, prices were increased at the weekends and other times to enable the wealthy to enjoy the exhibits without rubbing shoulders with the "hoi polloi," he added. Leapman said the author Charles Dickens was on a committee to represent the interests of working-class people, but?the exhibition's organizers paid so little attention to?it?that?Dickens quit.

Security was another big concern, with the event coming not long after several European?revolutions in 1848 and amid unrest associated with the working-class Chartist movement in the U.K.

"The Duke of Wellington [a national hero after his victory over Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815] wanted to put a troop of cavalry into Hyde Park, but the government said that would be a bit too provocative," Leapman said.

The government also attempted to set up a register of accommodation with set prices, but Leapman said most landlords resisted signing up, trusting the free market to give a better return.

'Enthusiasm'
But the generally positive outcome of the event?gives Leapman, who has tickets to watch hockey, some comfort amid all the present-day moaning.

He said that while there might be "some inconvenience" during the Olympics "I have a feeling it will be a great success, partly judging from the Great Exhibition."

At Olympics, dogs have sniffed out a key anti-terror role

And so?the views of?Hugh Robertson, the U.K. government's minister for sport and the Olympics, should perhaps not be viewed with the usual British cynicism toward politicians.

"My experience of the Games across the country has been one of fantastic support and enthusiasm," he told msnbc.com in a statement, noting the "huge demand" for tickets.

"The Royal Wedding showed that Britons know how to get behind national events, and London 2012 will be the chance to do that on a giant scale," Robertson added. "We [are] determined that everybody who comes to London for the Games has an amazing time."

John Powell, chairman of leading athletics club Belgrave Harriers, is exactly the sort of person who should be bursting with enthusiasm for the Games.

He will carry the Olympic torch and is the coach of sprinter James Ellington, who is a medal prospect for the U.K. if he makes it through the trials.

Powell told msnbc.com that he was "very excited" about carrying the flame; and?it would be "amazing" to coach an athlete to a medal,?the "pinnacle" of his 36 years of coaching.

But even he has a gripe.

If Ellington wins gold, Powell, his coach of some 13 years, will watch his triumph on television because, he said, he and many other coaches will not be given access to the stadium, a decision he described as?"shambolic and a scandal."

"That really does take the edge of it from my point of view," Powell said.

Buon compleanno Twitter!

Be careful, that green grass may have been painted!

While it may appear to you, as an outsider, that things are rosy - they are not always as they seem.

This is something I've learned from actual experience.

When I was a fitness instructor, there was another instructor where I was teaching that appeared to have a very loving marriage with an attentive husband. He would send her flowers to the gym during special occasions and when we all went out of town for fitness conventions he would call to make sure she made it ok and then talk to her each day. She would tell us he wanted to see if she was having fun and what she was doing, etc. He seemed to be the "perfect husband" and I was jealous.

Fast forward to about 6 months later and I was shocked to hear that they were divorcing.

Appears that "perfect husband" was a wolf in sheep's clothing. His flowers, attentiveness and phone calls were to keep tabs on her while he carried on an affair at their house, in their bed...she finally caught him and filed for divorce. She is now remarried, he is still playing the field.

Now, I'm not saying that all attentive husbands are rotten behind their wives backs, my point is...things are not always as they seem.

The grass can look really green but all you see is what someone allows you to see - things behind closed doors and in day-to-day life can be quite different.

Learn to accept your marriage, as it is, if it works for you and your husband. Comparing your marriage to others, with only a glimpse of what their marriage is "really" like can lead you to feel that something is missing or disappointed, when your marriage is just fine, but different.

My husband and I banter back and forth and to outside strangers it may seem as though we hate each other, but this is how we have always been with each other and it's how we love each other and we don't care what outsiders think.

This is a good point and I have witnessed the same thing. I, too, have felt very jealous of those couples who just seem so happy and have that natural rapport all the time. Usually when I dig deeper into their relationship I end up seeing a whole lot of things that put it all into perspective and make me happy for what I have.

Two of my very good friends have a marriage like you described where they are constantly PDA, saying nice things to each other, etc. But then I spent some time with the wife alone for a weekend and saw that intermixed with the nice gestures and compliments he was calling her 24/7 about every.single.thing - like what groceries to buy, how to lock the doors, how to do the laundry, what color of toothbrush to buy, like you cannot even.imagine. Turns out he is virtually incompetent at handling the simplest of tasks by himself and refuses to make decisions for himself, which she told me annoyed the sh!t out of her. The problem has only gotten worse over the last few years...right then I was thankful to have a very handy, self sufficient and capable husband that does not call me every five minutes.

i agree with TG, AR, and lady frog.....it took us almost 20 years to get to where we are. it was hell.

we have talked to annoying minute detail...grave details about..feelings, and attitudes, and...feelings...ugh..

we had so much resentment, and rejection, rug sweeping, built up over our relationship.

like AR, if you see us, you would think aww, young love how sweet..but the road we have traveled.....

we still wonder if its worth it..some days it is..others its up in the air..

Russia, China join U.N. council in call for Syria peace

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - In a major diplomatic blow for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Russia and China joined the U.N. Security Council on Wednesday in voicing support for U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan's bid to end violence that has brought Syria to the brink of civil war.

Western diplomats said the agreement on a statement voicing the "gravest concern at the deteriorating situation in Syria" should be a wake-up call for Assad, who has counted on support from his ally Russia to fend off international criticism of his year-long attempt to crush anti-government protests.

The statement threatens Syria with "further steps" if it fails to comply with Annan's six-point peace proposal, which calls for a cease-fire, political dialogue between government and opposition, and full access for aid agencies.

The U.S.-European push for a council statement backing Annan's mission came after Russia and China twice vetoed resolutions condemning Assad's assault on demonstrators, which the United Nations says has killed well over 8,000 civilians.

Unlike resolutions, which are legally binding and need nine votes in favor and no vetoes from the five permanent council members to pass, statements are generally non-binding but require unanimous support from the council.

Although the statement does not explicitly back an Arab League plan calling for Assad to step aside, it does include Annan's call for a political process that echoes that plan.

It voices "full support for the efforts of (Annan) to bring an immediate end to all violence and human rights violations, secure humanitarian access, and facilitate a Syrian-led political transition to a democratic, plural political system."

The statement also demands that the Syrian government stop fighting first, something Annan and the West have called for.

"The Syrian government should immediately cease troop movements towards, and end the use of heavy weapons in, population centers, and begin pullback of military concentrations in and around population centers," it said.

Once the government forces stop fighting, Syrian authorities "should work with (Annan) to bring about a sustained cessation of armed violence in all its forms by all parties."

"PRAGMATIC LOOK"

Western powers diluted the 15-nation council's "presidential statement" on Tuesday in an effort to secure the support of Russia, which had disliked language in an earlier version that it said sounded like an ultimatum for Syria, diplomats said.

Speaking at a news conference in Berlin shortly before the statement was agreed to, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov made clear that Moscow fully supported the amended text.

"The council text reflects the reality in Syria and supports Annan's aims," Lavrov said after talks in Berlin with his German and Polish counterparts. "We support it fully."

"The most important thing is that there are no ultimatums ... and no suggestions as to who carries more blame," he said.

In New York, Russian U.N. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin said the council had "finally chosen to take a pragmatic look at Syria."

British U.N. Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant said the statement sends a "strong and united message to the government and all other actors in Syria that they need to respond ... immediately" to Annan's peace proposals.

German Ambassador Peter Wittig told reporters that he welcomed the "newly found unity of the council."

The council also approved informal remarks to the press that Russia had asked the council to issue condemning bomb attacks last weekend in the cities of Damascus and Aleppo.

The presidential statement is separate from a U.S.-drafted resolution calling on Syria to allow access to humanitarian aid workers in the country.

The last time the council passed a presidential statement on Syria was August 2011, although council members reached a rare unanimous agreement on informal remarks to the press on March 1 to rebuke Damascus for not allowing U.N. humanitarian aid chief Valerie Amos into the country.

Shortly after the council approved those remarks to the press, Amos was allowed to visit Damascus.

49ers, WR Mario Manningham agree on 2-year deal

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? The San Francisco 49ers landed another wide receiver in a headline-making week for the NFC West champions, agreeing to terms Saturday with free agent Mario Manningham on a two-year contract.

Randy Moss joined the roster last Monday.

Now, the big question is who will be throwing them the ball: Peyton Manning or Alex Smith?

Manningham met Thursday with the 49ers, who still appear to have interest in Manning after coach Jim Harbaugh worked him out Tuesday at Duke University. Manning worked out for the Tennessee Titans on Saturday and it appears he will now choose between them, San Francisco and the Denver Broncos.

Have the 49ers done enough already to entice him, and show they're aiming for another shot at the Super Bowl this season?

Agent Drew Rosenhaus confirmed Saturday night that Manningham, the former New York Giants wideout, had reached a deal with the 49ers, who lost in overtime of the NFC championship game to Manningham and the eventual Super Bowl champions at Candlestick Park on Jan. 22.

Manningham caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Eli Manning with 8:34 remaining in regulation of the NFC title game to help New York reach the Super Bowl.

He had five more receptions for 73 yards in the Giants' 21-17 Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots, including an over-the-shoulder 38-yard catch between two defenders on which he managed to stay inbounds to start the game-winning, 88-yard touchdown drive.

The 25-year-old Manningham had 39 catches for 523 yards and four touchdowns total last year in his fourth NFL season.

Manningham will join an upgraded receiving corps that also includes Moss, who signed a one-year contract Monday, and Michael Crabtree, the team's 10th overall pick in the 2009 draft out of Texas Tech who had 72 receptions for 874 yards and four touchdowns in 2011.

"It's going down. Mario Manningham signs with 49ers. This is a sick WR squad. It's going to be crazy on the Offensive side of the ball," tweeted defensive lineman Ricky Jean Francois.

The 49ers, who ended an eight-year playoff drought in Harbaugh's first season of 2011, also will return their entire starting defensive 11 after bringing back cornerback Carlos Rogers on a $31.3 million, four-year deal this week. So, that too could be attractive to Peyton Manning, even though there's speculation he would prefer to stay in the AFC and not have to regularly face off with his younger brother.

Smith had been expected to re-sign with the 49ers and acknowledged he was weighing a three-year contract offer ? but that all might have changed in a matter of a few days once Manning entered the 49ers' picture. The San Francisco Chronicle reported on its Web site Saturday, citing a league source, that Smith was considering changing agents from Tom Condon, who also represents Manning.

An e-mail to 49ers CEO Jed York, Smith and agents at CAA Sports went unreturned Saturday.

to him about the origin of standardized testing, the Taylorists and the
Eugenecists.? As described in the post:

As Wayne Au explains in his book, Unequal By Design, standardized testing entered the public schools in the early 1900s as a way to graft scientific management models used in assembly line production onto the classroom by Taylorists and Eugenicists?the pseudo scientists that believed intelligence is genetic and that whites were biologically superior to other races or ethnic groups. Au writes,

?Looking back to its origins in the eugenics movement, Standardized testing provided the technological apparatus for the functioning of the production model of education? It is no coincidence that I.Q testing, eugenics and standardized testing all become prominent during the same period?.?
And now the letter to the school board by Jack Whelan:
Dear Seattle Schools Board Directors:
I want to talk to you about teacher morale. I understand that the children come first, but teachers are in a situation that reminds me of the safety instructions flight attendants give concerning oxygen masks. They instruct adults traveling with small children to put the mask on themselves first?and then on the child. Why? If the adult instead tries to put the mask on the child first, there?s a good chance both child and adult will die. In order to take good care of the children, you have to first take care of the adults who take care of them. If the adults aren?t flourishing, neither can the children flourish. But elite thinking in this country seems bent on a course that is destroying teacher morale. Teachers are not flourishing; they are under constant attack. And anybody who truly understands how schools work and education happens must push back against this campaign against teachers.
Teachers are under attack by people who either don?t understand how education works or have their own interests to serve in promoting this attack. These interests have a big enough megaphone to have established a widespread perception that poor instruction and bad teachers are the primary cause for failing students. This negative view of teachers has been promoted through an organized, highly scripted campaign, and it has successfully established as conventional wisdom that poor teaching and union obstructionism are the primary reason for failing schools. It just isn?t. That isn?t to say that teacher quality and professionalism can?t be improved. But the ideas that these ?reformers? present are profoundly flawed and distract us from finding real solutions to improve the quality of instruction.
Ten years from now we will look back on this misguided reform program and wonder what we were thinking. Hardly any of it makes sense, and yet many intelligent, sensible people have accepted this anti-teacher messaging as established truth. And its acceptance is particularly prevalent among both Democratic and Republican elites, especially those who have had some success in business or have strong business ties. These elites have come to believe that management techniques and incentives used sometimes successfully in the business sphere are transferable to the educational sphere, i.e., that we need to manage schools efficiently and rationally on a business basis following a technocratic blueprint that owes much to Frederick Taylor?s ?scientific management? techniques.
The Taylorite goal is to increase worker productivity by implementing rational efficient techniques. These techniques while they often improve the bottom line often have a dehumanizing effect on workers. We are witnessing the gradual Taylorization of our schools into learning factories in which teachers are the assembly line workers, children the widgets they produce, and principals the middle managers whose sole job it is to meet arbitrarily determined production quotas. And so it follows that if the widgets are defective, it?s the assembly line workers? fault or the managers? for not effectively ?incentivizing? line workers to meet production goals. This is a system that is designed to promote organizational investor interests, not human interests.
Incentives in the form of extrinsic rewards and punishments have been proven insulting and ineffective with good teachers whose motivations are intrinsic. The best teachers are values driven, not rewards driven. Good teachers need to be paid well enough so they don?t have to worry about money, but they are not primarily motivated by money. They are not motivated by ambitions for advancement that typifies corporate careers. They just want to work with the kids. In my view, this is one of the main reasons the corporate reformers do not respect teachers; they simply cannot understand why anybody worth his salt would be motivated by anything other than monetary or career-advancement rewards. That?s not how business works, where everything is about wining and losing, and you keep score with dollar figures. Teachers must, therefore, be an unambitious, shiftless lot, and aren?t even worth what they?re getting paid now.
This Taylorite agenda has been more quickly implemented in red states than in blue. Diane Ravitch wrote recently in her Education Week blog about what is going on in several red states:
Gov. Jindal is in a race to the bottom with other Republican governors to see who can move fastest to destroy the underpinnings of public education and to instill fear in the hearts of teachers. It?s hard to say which of them is worst: Jindal, Scott Walker of Wisconsin, Mitch Daniels of Indiana, Rick Scott of Florida, John Kasich of Ohio, or ?. There are so many contenders for the title, it?s hard to name them all. They all seem to be working from the same playbook: Remove any professionalism and sense of security from teachers; expand privatization as rapidly as possible, through charters and vouchers; intensify reliance on high-stakes tests to evaluate teachers and schools; tighten the regulations on public schools while deregulating the privately managed charter schools. Keep up the attack on many fronts, to confuse the supporters of public education.
Many of these agenda items are being pushed in Washington State, but because of its more progressive ethos, Washingtonians have been able to retard their implementation. But while Washingtonians have been successful in pushing back against charters in the current legislative session, they have not been successful in pushing back against wrongheaded, deeply flawed, teacher-evaluation legislation, nor have they been successful in pushing back against another attack tactic, namely, the expansion of Teach for America.
Now I know some of you might have a hard time seeing TFA as part of a Taylorite or ?privatizing? agenda. You ask yourself, what could be wrong with adding TFA to the mix? These bright, idealistic kids don?t have any agenda except to do as good a job as they can for the kids in their classrooms. I don?t dispute that. I admire the youthful idealism that characterizes the commitment of most TFA recruits. But this isn?t about the recruits; it?s about TFA as an organization and its slick, aggressive campaign to expand everywhere, even where it isn?t needed. There are reasons why TFA is so controversial. TFA isn?t just a sweetly idealistic group whose sole purpose is to right society?s wrongs. Something else is at the heart of its mission, and you have to be terribly gullible or willfully blind not to see it.
What drives Wendy Kopp? Why is she the darling of all the people who are in the privatizing ?reform? movement Ravitch references above? You cannot understand TFA in a political vacuum. You must understand it as an essential element in this larger nationwide attack on public education. TFA is not an organization whose primary mission is to close the achievement gap. Maybe at one time it was, but now it?s about something else. It describes itself as a leadership development organization, and the leadership style it promotes is very much aligned with the Taylorite reformers.
You cannot look at TFA in isolation from all the other agenda-driven actions being promoted by the Taylorites. These reformers are all about de-professionalizing teaching. That?s what TFA recruits are. Energetic, youthful non-professionals. The Taylorite reformers are all about technocratic control and increased efficiency, and they see the union as one of the greatest obstacles to that control.
The Taylorites are OK with high turnover, because they don?t believe that experience contributes to teacher effectiveness, and they don?t want expensive teachers with seniority. The message between the lines in TFA self-promotion is that teaching isn?t that hard, that any bright kid with a few weeks of training can be a teacher. And Taylorites are looking for whatever tools they can use to diminish the power of teachers? unions. Their goal is to show that all we need is bright, motivated (and malleable) kids in the classroom and that we have no real need for experienced, well-trained, savvy teachers who will push back against the Taylorite agenda.
Can you see why this embrace of TFA demoralizes good teachers, especially those who have been at it for a while? Can you see how insulting it is? Can you understand why teachers are so often outraged at the cluelessness of people who naively accept at face value the slick TFA promotional message? Can you see why people question the rationale for the district going through all this trouble to install TFA recruits when the actual benefits for SPS are so minuscule? The question ought not to be ?Why not TFA as part of the mix??, which seems to have been the board?s justification, but ?Why TFA at all?? What purpose does it serve? What problems is it solving? What special competency do its recruits have that cannot be found through normal channels?
There are simply no substantively good reasons for TFA to work within SPS, and there are plenty of reasons why it should not. It is very hard to understand why the board agreed to place TFA recruits last year. I can only conclude that it did so because its members have uncritically accepted TFA?s promotional message and because its friends in business community are pro-TFA. But the board does not serve business-community interests; it serves first the children and then the teachers who are on front line serving the children. The teachers have told you repeatedly that they don?t want TFA. Your allowing TFA into SPS is just another demoralizing slap in the face of teachers, and it is non-productive and unnecessary.
Please ask yourself whose interests are being served in extending the TFA contract. In extending this contract, are there tangible benefits that can be defended against the obvious, tangible costs, especially to teacher morale? Please give this some thought before coming to a final decision. Please join with those who are pushing back against this attack on teachers by voting to cancel Seattle Public School?s contract with Teach for America when it comes to a vote later this month.
Sincerely,
Jack Whelan
