Intel, Samsung get behind new Linux phone software (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Two Linux software groups have joined forces, they said on Wednesday, to develop a new operating system for cellphones and other devices in collaboration with Intel and Samsung Electronics.

However, analysts said the new Tizen platform is likely to struggle to attract wider developer and manufacturer support to compete with the dozen or so other mobile operating systems in a market dominated by Apple and Google's Linux-based Android.

Even industry majors Nokia and Hewlett-Packard have ditched their mobile platforms this year.

"The best hope for them is that big operators get worried by Android's increasing smartphone dominance and decide to consciously switch their allegiances to rival platforms to restrict Google's huge influence over the mobile market," said analyst Neil Mawston from Strategy Analytics.

LiMo Foundation and the Linux Foundation said the new Tizen platform is an open-source, standards-based software platform that supports multiple devices including smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, netbooks and in-vehicle 'infotainment' systems.

The initial release is planned for the first quarter of 2012, enabling the first devices using Tizen to come to market in mid-2012, the two groups said.

The world's largest semiconductor firm Intel, which also has its own MeeGo Linux system, and Samsung Electronics, the second biggest maker of cell phones and one of the key contributors to LiMo, will head the technical steering committee developing Tizen.

"Tizen aims to unify a number of marginalized Linux based platforms," said Geoff Blaber, an analyst at London-based telecoms industry consultancy CCS Insight.

"There is a willingness to create an independent alternative to Android but history tells us that willingness doesn't necessarily equate to success," he added.

Samsung is the leading user of the Android platform, but some other makers of Android-operated phones have begun to look at alternatives since Google agreed to buy Motorola Mobility last month for $12.5 billion.

"Samsung might be further tempted to try a new system as Google's acquisition of Motorola Mobility raised uncertainty over the future of Android," said Song Jong-ho, an analyst at Daewoo Securities.

A spokesman for Samsung said: "We've been a core Linux partner ... and this is in line with our strategy of supporting many platforms."

Earlier this month Intel and Google launched a development partnership to adapt Android for Intel's Atom processor chips, with a view to having the first Android phones featuring Intel chips in the first half of next year.

Linux is the most popular type of free, or open-source, computer operating system which allows the public to use, revise and share. Linux suppliers earn money selling improvements and technical services.

Since 2006, the folks in in Cupertino have been offering added entertainment for the popular mobile jukebox for $7.49 each, but only about 50 titles were available for purchase -- it's kind of hard to develop software when a third-party kit wasn't publicly released. So if you're planning on hanging onto your iPod classic for a little while, we hope you're content to keep playing Vortex, Klondike or whatever else you've already downloaded.

Workers Compensation Is Really A Century Now; Is It Currently In ...

Workers Compensation Nsw

Workers compensation is an alternate means for employees to recover for work-associated accidents, other than suing their employers. States began passing workers? comp legal guidelines about a hundred years ago. Workers? Compensation pertains to afflictions or injuries sustained over the course of the everyday workday, during the course of carrying out work-related jobs. This can vary from crucial wounds or incapacity attributable to an accident or unsafe working environments, to progressively noticeable problems, like with carpal tunnel syndrome.

The wellbeing of employees and business

This system gives a level of protection to businesses and workers within the case of unsafe working situations or accidents; instead of counting on litigation for compensation, a state-sponsored insurance program helps to defray the cost of recovery. It is very important to know your workers compensation benefits to your specific state. You must understand the process especially if you are in a dangerous occupation.

Prior to 1911, staff who injured themselves on the job obtained compensation by a system known as negligible liability. The individual states have the right to regulate commerce inside their borders based on the U.S. Constitution?s tenth amendment. This meant that employers and their workers who have been injured went by way of the state?s authorized process to prove their case. It was torture.

Litigation quandary lead to reforms

Prior to the institution of staff compensation, even winning a case would not guarantee compensation to the workers because of particular loopholes that allowed businesses to keep away from liability. Now with workers compensation, the injured employee is given a incapacity rating after being examined by a health care provider at which level the employer?s insurance coverage company strikes into settle the injured employee?s claim.

Both workers and employers benefit from workers compensation laws for varying causes; employers now have a secure compensation system constructed on the insurance format as an alternative of the uncertainties of liability suits complicated by jury trials. Employees benefited in a variety of ways from the change in workplace accident compensation. The insurance coverage model allowed them to work with out fear and uncertainty of being destitute or having to face the onerous legal system at one time was biased in favor of the employer.

Getting honest treatment

Do not hesitate to seek the advice of with an lawyer in case your advantages have been delayed or denied; their often are no charges up front when consulting a workers compensation claim. Workers compensation has turn out to be one of the chief pillars of our social insurance coverage programs for staff within the United States. Many of those applications have been developed or adopted over a century in the past but took years to turn into established throughout the country.

Employees who?re unable to work due to accepted circumstances associated to an industrial injury or occupational disease might be qualified for partial wage substitute benefits. Workers? compensation will pay for the very first health-related appointment and an ambulance, if needed. Workers have the proper to select their doctor in most states. Company owners should document what brought on the damage, talk together with your worker, and confirm all of the information in the accident report they?ll receive from workers? compensation. Employers should offer coverage for his or her employees. In return, employers normally can?t be sued for damages whenever a work-related damage or illness happens. Owners of sole proprietorships and other businesses without employees aren?t don?t have to file workers? compensation insurance coverage. However, they might elect to purchase it from the state to guard their own medical fees if they are wounded on the job. There are online workers?compensation forms accessible for at the different state websites as well as statistical tutorials and rates. Go to the site available in your state.

Learn additional facts concerning workers compensation ontario.

Basically, workers? compensation is a sort of insurance policy which state law requires all employers on this state to purchase as a protection for his or her staff in case of a work-related damage or work-related accident. If an employer fails to purchase employee?s compensation insurance coverage, an injured employee will nonetheless be protected if he has a legitimate work comp case by a State agency known as The Uninsured Employers Fund. Although we take these advances with no consideration right now; there was sturdy opposition from many fronts through the early establishment of our compensation system. In case you are injured on the job, it is vitally important that you simply perceive the employees compensation process. Authorized decisions by the courts and the state?s statutes will control how your claim is handled. Totally different states have specific measures for controlling costs of advantages to injured workers.

Is Las Vegas The 'New Ibiza'? Music, Nightlife Experts Weigh In

Electric Daisy Carnival, A-list residencies and mega-venues solidify Sin City's global appeal to dance-music community.
By Adam Stewart

Photo: Las Vegas News Bureau

For as long as most dance-music aficionados can recall, Miami has been the Stateside destination for sun, fun and the hottest music year-round. But in just a short period of time, a new player has emerged. In the blink of an eye, America's Playground has morphed into America's Dance Music Capital.

Consider the 200,000 electronica fans who descended on Las Vegas International Speedway for the Electric Daisy Carnival in June, or the billboards up and down the Strip plastered with dance-music superstars such as Tiësto, Dirty South and deadmau5. It's hard to believe that just a few years ago, Sin City catered to an entirely different scene.

"Say there are 100 clubs in Vegas: Two years ago, 90 were playing hip-hop, 10 were playing house," said Shawn Sabo, Beatport co-founder and member of the Manufactured Superstars. "But now it's completely flopped. Ten are playing hip-hop, 90 are playing house — and I really don't think it's going to stop."

With an estimated 37 million visitors hitting the Strip annually, and America's interest in the electronic dance music (EDM) scene exploding, Vegas is going pedal-to-the-metal for the dance-music craze.

"The Palms was the first major hotel/casino to have a dedicated house-music night," said Jon Gray, SVP of the N9ne Group and head of nightlife for the Palms Hotel & Casino.

It was just three short years ago, in fall 2008, that the Palms welcomed Paul Oakenfold for the city's first house-music residency, and his Planet Perfecto on Saturdays at Rain Nightclub was arguably the catalyst for the city's dance-music boom.

"Ibiza is still, first and foremost, the powerhouse for electronic music and it always will be, but you can see how Vegas has moved incredibly fast so that it's on an equal par," Oakenfold told MTV News prior to one of his legendary sets.

"The DJs used to be back in the corner and you never knew who the DJ was," the Palms' Gray added. "But now, every major nightclub has brought the DJ booth to the center of the nightclub and brought in some huge names."

Not surprisingly, DJ-centric mega-clubs exceeding 50,000 square feet or more are quickly becoming the norm, and things are just as popping in the daytime. Initially conceived at the Hard Rock's infamous Rehab Sundays in 2004, the modern Las Vegas pool party is rite of passage for the weekend warrior — and there is no shortage of options to keep even the most fickle clubber content. Thanks to recent investments and expansions such as Encore Beach, the Cosmopolitan's Marquee Day Club, Tropicana's Nikki Beach and MGM's Wet Republic, high-end pool parties have raised the bar and transformed Vegas into the premier destination for those looking to hit the increasingly popular day-club scene.

"We have bungalows with private Jacuzzis. We have an 'ultra lounge,' which holds 40 people, including its own private bar and bartender. Every bungalow has its own bathroom, and our bungalows downstairs even have their own shower. So we've really gone over the top," said Sean Christie, operating partner of Encore Beach and Surrender Nightclub.

Encore Beach and its sister clubs, Surrender and XS, play host to resident DJs Kaskade and Pete Tong, along with appearances over the summer by deadmau5, Afrojack, Skrillex, Calvin Harris and Swedish House Mafia's Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso, along with his protégé Alesso, to name just a few. Their laundry list of internationally known acts and massive events continues into the early fall.

Longtime DJ and Producer Kaskade has also taken note of the remarkable change in the tides as he rounds out his second year of residency at Encore Beach.

"This is probably the biggest and best pool party in the world," he said just prior to his set one summer afternoon. "The venue is crazy, the sound is crazy, we get four or five thousand people in here."

And just down the road, another party goes just as hard with equally big names. From Laidback Luke to Avicii, Armin Van Buuren to Cedric Gervais and Above & Beyond to LMFAO, Marquee Dayclub (and Nightclub) has no shortage of reasons for eager fans to flock by the thousands.

"Vegas is more equipped to handle the volume year-round," said Jason Strauss, owner and co-founder of the Strategic Group, the entity behind both the Lavo, Tao and Marquee franchises. "With the proliferation of casinos and all the hotel rooms, we're able to accommodate all the people that Ibiza and all of these other secondary markets can't."

Strauss and partner Noah Tepperberg ventured to up the ante with the Vegas version of Marquee Nightclub at one of the Strip's newest gems, the Cosmopolitan Hotel & Casino. Boasting nearly 3,000 guest rooms, on a typical summer weekend, many are occupied by 20- and 30-somethings for bachelor parties, girls' weekends and a zillion other reasons to head out to the clubs, blow off steam and spend some serious green.

"I've seen Las Vegas grow," DJ Cedric Gervais said. "And what [Jason] has done to Las Vegas with Marquee Nightclub is amazing — and I think Las Vegas really is becoming the new Ibiza."

"That's been my mantra for the past year," said Joel Zimmerman, U.S. head of William Morris Electronic, the partnership spawned by Pete Tong and the L.A.-based William Morris Agency. Not to be confused with the other Joel Zimmerman, a.k.a. Canadian DJ/producer deadmau5, WME's Joel is the man who many point to as a key player behind Vegas dance-music explosion and the high-end talent that has been brought in. While he's quick to point out the parallels, he noted that Vegas isn't out to take Ibiza's place in international club culture.

"I don't think we're taking people away from going to Ibiza," he said. "One's a beautiful Balearic island off the coast of Barcelona, and the other is stuck in the middle of the desert where people come to lose their minds. But the transient aspect of the island and Vegas, being a different crop of people every weekend, is very similar."

The latest statistics show tourism is up 4.9 percent year over year through July, and forecasts estimate that Labor Day weekend alone brought nearly 291,000 into town — an increase of 3.6 percent from last year. During the holiday weekend, visitors spent $178.7 million of non-gaming revenue, up an estimated 3.9 percent, versus the same weekend last summer.

While the grand totals for summer 2011 have yet to be tallied, Cathy Tull, SVP of marketing at the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority told MTV News summer 2010 brought Vegas an excess of 12.9 million visitors and took in nearly $8.3 billion in revenue. And keep in mind, these figures were for the year before Electric Daisy Carnival came to town — not bad for a desert oasis once known only for its slot machines, gentlemen's clubs and bargain buffets.

Thanks in large part to its night (and day) life, Las Vegas is an anomaly in the current economic climate, showing no signs of slowing down. Paired with America's insatiable pallet for EDM, the Las Vegas nightlife machine has undeniably proven to the rest of the world: If you build it, they will club.

Did you make it to Vegas over the summer to catch your favorite EDM superstars? Tell us about your wildest 2011 Sin City moments in the comments below! (And don't worry: What happens In Vegas is totally safe to talk about on MTVNews.com!)

Medical Bankruptcy Due to Downfall of Economy | ciboron.com

As the years go by, more and more people succumb to debt. This is partly due to the rising cost of doctor and hospital care. When you combine this factor along with the current recession, it?s no wonder why patients are having a hard time paying for their medical care. Eventually, patients are unable to keep up with the payments and opt to file medical bankruptcy so that they can escape from collection agencies.

Some people are at a higher risk of getting an illness and in turn, they?re also more prone to file for bankruptcy. For instance, elderly people find that they need medical attention and visits to the doctor more often. They have to pay for medicines, doctor?s fee and extended care facilities. All of these costs deplete their funds and they have a hard time paying the bills. They don?t want to lose all the money they earned their whole lives.

Usually, employees benefit from employer paid medical insurance and this is adequate enough to cover their medical bills. Unfortunately, due to the recession, some employees lost their jobs. They have to find other ways to pay for their medical expenses because they are no longer covered by the employer paid insurance. In some companies, employers have changed insurance coverage to cut back on cost. The employer can increase the deductibles per month or change the percentage of co-payment. The co-pay percentage is affected by factors such as smoking or obesity. It can also affect the coverage of medicines. Even if the employee is insured, the changes in insurance coverage can still lead to unpaid medical bills.

Since patients are often threatened with lawsuits, they often turn to the bankruptcy process. Ideally, a bankruptcy claim should be the last solution people entertain. It?s a serious matter that can affect the state of the person?s finances permanently. It?s highly advised that the patient consult a bankruptcy attorney to determine whether bankruptcy is the right solution. There might be better options depending on the case.

The number of people who have medical debt would probably continue to increase over the years unless there?s a favorable change in the economy. It won?t be a surprise to see more medical bankruptcy filings in the future.

Romney catching up to Perry after Florida debate (Daily Caller)

Mitt Romney is closing in on Rick Perry in the wake of last Thursday?s debate in Florida, according to a CNN/ORC poll released Monday.

The poll, which was conducted in the three days following the debate, found Romney, who trailed Perry by 12 percentage points two weeks ago, is now just 7 points behind, taking 21 percent to Perry?s 28 percent among Republican voters.

Newt Gingrich now places third, with 10 percent, followed by Herman Cain, Sarah Palin and Ron Paul, who are tied with 7 percent each.

Without Sarah Palin in the race, Perry gets 30 percent of the vote, Romney 22 percent and Gingrich 11 percent. Herman Cain is in 4th at 9 percent, followed by Ron Paul with 7 percent.

In a general election against President Barack Obama, Romney fares the best of the candidates, getting 48 percent to Obama?s 49 percent ? a statistical tie. Perry does worse, losing to Obama 46 percent to 51 percent among registered voters, putting him on par with Ron Paul, who loses 47 percent to 51 percent.

Romney is also the only candidate whom a majority of registered voters feel has the personality and leadership qualities a president should have. Sixty-two percent of registered voters agree that Romney has those qualities, while just 47 percent say Perry does. By comparison, 58 percent of voters say Obama possesses those qualities. (ALSO ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL: Dennis Miller boards the Herman Cain train)

The poll surveyed 1,010 American?adults using live telephone interviews from September 23 through September 25. The sample of registered voters included 917 people, and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage point. The sample of 447 Republicans has a 4.5 percentage point margin of error.

Montreal filmmakers Patrick Boivin and Olivier Roberge land ...

MONTREAL - Montrealers Patrick Boivin and Olivier Roberge have a sweet little debut feature film called Enfin l?Automne (Fall, Finally). Good for them.

A feel-good love triangle where friendship trumps jealousy, it stands on easy dialogue, crisp cinematography and direction; fine performances from Christine Beaulieu, Louis Tremblay, Jacques Laroche and famed former Montreal DJ-turned-thespian Dean Hagopian; and romance-worthy tunes from local bands like Timber Timbre, Misteur Valaire, Ricky Eat Acid, Magic Man and Foxes in Fiction. And all this with a princely budget of $45,000. Fantastic!

But Quebec filmmakers have been known to make first features once in their lives; underknown actors have deferred salaries for exposure and experience; and the new technology makes shooting and editing a relatively inexpensive process for creatively nimble digital wizards like Boivin and Roberge.

No, what makes Enfin l?Automne stand out in this thin crowd ? what makes it unique ? is that it is the first Canadian feature to have YouTube as its platform, with the benediction of the Internet giant and something it calls a Partnership Program.

As Boivin explained it, one week and 11,500 hits after his 70-minute, English-subtitled work was uploaded (to youtube.com/user/PatrickBoivin), the three-year partnership gives the filmmaker access to the platform ?for things you have rights to, and they get the right to piggyback commercials on them.?

Boivin is no stranger to YouTube (check out his channel for short films, bio and more), the Internet or the camera. This is how the self-described autodidact explained his life?s progress and the four years it took to bring Enfin l?Automne to the Web:

?I started drawing comic books when I was 15 years old and soon found it was easier to communicate with a camera. I did a lot of different things over the next 15 years ? TV, commercials, videos ? and got tired of them. Then I discovered YouTube and knew I wanted to do something with it, but wasn?t sure what.

?My first clips were viral clips and they generated a lot of interest. (Boivin?s channel has attracted way north of 1,000,000 views.) Bands contacted me, and I did clips for Indochine, Iggy Pop and others. Google and Pixel called me, and I did a lot of viral clips for those companies and others, as well as personal clips for myself.?

Boivin described the great leap forward to features. ?The idea for making a film without any money made sense because we knew we had an online fan base. Plus, I was making good money with YouTube and reinvesting it in equipment.?

Most important, he and Roberge had a story to tell that was near and dear to their hearts, and would ring true on small, medium or large screens.

?The story is about us, in our 30s, wanting to have girlfriends and start families, but having nothing. We were alone. Olivier and I actually got involved in a triangle that worked out well ? a happy triangle ? and we decided to make a movie about it.?

It would feel right. It would feel real. It would be a feel-good film about the power of friendships. ?We didn?t want any guns or special effects, and every scene is shot in documentary style, so it felt like it was really happening. ?

The two were blessed with access to leads Beaulieu, Tremblay and Laroche, who agreed to work for nothing in exchange for worldwide exposure. Locations fell into place, and the mother-of-necessity decision to make the film for virtually nothing meant time was on their side.

?Normally, Canadian movies are shot in five weeks. We took 10, waited for all three actors to be free, and rehearsed till we had it right.? The music was a charm as well, with a dozen bands offering songs for free in trade for links to their websites.

The delivery system was another no-brainer. Bricks-and-mortar theatrical distribution was out of the question. ?With no money, we had no choice. The Web was obvious for us. YouTube offers something incredible. We can show our movie to the world.

?We had no expectations, because we didn?t want to be disappointed, but we?re really proud of it. We didn?t make it to be popular. It?s not an easy movie for everyone, but it really talks to people in their 30s.?

For a couple of guys with nothing to lose but their optimism, Enfin l?Automne has already surpassed whatever modest goals were set for it. And its appeal has reached at least one Canadian cultural bureaucrat with access to public funding, Boivin revealed.

?We?ve got money to make another film. A real one this time!?

Google Drive could finally be ready for launch, may just be rebranded Docs

Google Drive
GDrive, GDisk, Google Drive - whatever they're calling it these days - is coming. At least according to our friends over at TechCrunch. The service has not just been a rumor, but an actual product since 2007. Sadly though, it never made it past the dogfooding stage. The internal cloud storage tool for Googlers has been highly anticipated, but in 2010 it seemed like the final nail was put in its coffin when Docs was turned into a makeshift replacement with the ability to store any file. Well, Google Drive still exists, and speculation is that Google Docs will eventually be rebranded as Drive and relaunched with non-Docs file storage moved to the forefront. What's more, it's rumored that there will be a desktop syncing component, similar to Dropbox. Of course, the image above (from a Google-sponsored presentation) and recently discovered mentions of Drive.Google.com in Chromium don't necessarily mean anything. But, if Google actually plans on taking this Chrome OS thing seriously, Drive seems like a natural companion service. For now though, we're just going to have wait patiently to see what, if anything, comes of these latest rumblings.

Google Drive could finally be ready for launch, may just be rebranded Docs originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 26 Sep 2011 10:46:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Hunter's TD rallies 49ers over Bengals 13-8

Alex Smith

By JOE KAY

updated 4:27 p.m. ET Sept. 25, 2011

CINCINNATI - One game in, the San Francisco 49ers' trip is already worth writing home about.

Kendall Hunter ran 7 yards for the game's only touchdown with 3:59 to go Sunday, rallying the 49ers to a 13-8 victory in front of the Cincinnati Bengals' smallest crowd for a home opener in 30 years.

Hunter's run completed the only noteworthy drive by the 49ers (2-1), who didn't even cross midfield until midway through the third quarter.

Cincinnati (1-2) was limited to a pair of field goals by Mike Nugent during rookie quarterback Andy Dalton's first dismal performance. He threw two interceptions in the fourth quarter, the first of his career.

There were only 43,363 fans at 65,500-seat Paul Brown Stadium, the Bengals' smallest crowd for a home opener since they played at Riverfront Stadium in 1981.

The 49ers sent them heading for the exits when Reggie Smith intercepted Dalton's forced throw with 1:45 left.

David Akers kicked three field goals for San Francisco, including a 53-yarder after Dalton's first interception, pushing the lead to 13-6. After Smith intercepted Dalton again with 1:45 to go, punter Andy Lee ran out of the end zone for a safety to finish it off with 2 seconds left.

It was a satisfying start to the 49ers' weeklong stay in the Buckeye State. They'll practice at Youngstown State the next few days, then head to Philadelphia for their next game.

An ugly arrival ended with Alex Smith's only good moments. He led a 10-play, 72-yard drive, hitting tight end Vernon Davis with a 20-yard pass on a misdirection play to set up the winning touchdown.

Until the closing minutes, it appeared the 49ers had forgotten to pack their West Coast offense. Ugliness abounded.

Running back Frank Gore fumbled to set up Cincinnati's field goal for a 6-3 lead in the fourth quarter. He also had a pass hit him in the facemask. Referee Jerome Boger said one 49ers false-start penalty was on "the entire offensive line."

The late drive saved them. Smith was under constant pressure and finished 20 of 30 overall for 201 yards and five sacks. The 49ers blunted drives with penalties, and Kevin Huber's punts pinned them at their own 10, 11, 12, 14 and 17, leaving too much ground for one of the NFL's least-productive offenses to cover.

Also, the 49ers were missing receiver Braylon Edwards, who hurt his right knee during an overtime loss to Dallas last Sunday.

The Bengals were at full-strength after deciding to let receiver Jerome Simpson play. He missed two days of practice because he's the focus of an investigation into a drug shipment to his home. He got into the game on the opening series and finished with only one catch for 6 yards.

Dalton had passer ratings above 100 in his first two starts, but repeatedly forced throws against the 49ers' defense. He went 17 of 32 for 157 yards and a rating of 40.8.

Is It Safe to Drink? The Problem with the Nation's Drinking Water Standards

Image: Gallery Stock

More than 6,000 chemicals pollute U.S. drinking water, yet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has added only one new pollutant to its regulatory roster in the past 15 years. Environmental groups have long raised questions about this track record, and the U.S. Government Accountability Office recently joined the chorus, releasing a report that charges the agency with taking actions that have ?impeded ... progress in helping assure the public of safe drinking water.?

Among other things, the GAO report says, the EPA relies on flawed data. To determine the level of a particular pollutant in drinking water?which the EPA does before making a regulatory ruling on it?the agency relies on analytic testing methods so insensitive that they cannot identify the contaminants at levels expected to cause health effects. In addition, since 1996 the EPA has been required to make regulatory decisions about five new pollutants each year, ruling on those that might pose the biggest threats to public health. The GAO report asserts that the agency has been ruling only on the ?low-hanging fruit??contaminants for which regulatory decisions are easy rather than those that might be the most dangerous. ?They?re not actually doing anything to protect public health,? says Mae Wu, an attorney at the Natural Resources Defense Council.

For its part, the EPA has pledged to review the nation?s drinking-water standards and to add at least 16 new contaminants to the list of those it regulates. This past February the agency reversed a long-standing decision to not regulate the rocket-fuel ingredient perchlorate, making the chemical the first new drinking-water contaminant to be regulated since 1996. In its response to the GAO, the EPA stated that ?no action? was necessary to better prioritize the contaminants on which the agency will rule in the future, nor did it acknowledge the need for improvements in data collection. The agency did, however, agree to consider improving its methods for alerting the public when there are drinking-water advisories.

2 Opus Dei followers on trial in France

(AP Photo/Remy de la Mauviniere)

(AP) ? Two Opus Dei followers and an association closely linked to the conservative Roman Catholic group went on trial Thursday, accused of forcing a disciple to work for more than a decade with little or no pay.

Defense lawyers portrayed it as a case about labor law, while an Opus Dei spokeswoman says the plaintiff in a Paris court chose of her own free will to follow the group.

But the trial is expected to shine a spotlight on the secretive group's practices. Dan Brown's bestseller "The Da Vinci Code" painted Opus Dei as a murderous, power-hungry sect, a portrayal the group vigorously protested.

Opus Dei's founder, Spanish priest Jose Maria Escriva de Balaguer, was made a saint by Pope John Paul II.

The trial came after a legal complaint by Catherine Tissier, who was 14 when she joined the Donson hotel school in eastern France, where the religious sacraments were led by Opus Dei.

Under the guidance of a "spiritual director," she gradually chose to follow Opus Dei's spiritual path and began working as a "numerary assistant."

"I was working from seven o'clock in the morning to ten o'clock in the evening every day, seven days a week. The three weeks of holidays we had were spent with Opus Dei, where they thought us theology and pursued in-depth studies on the spirit of the (Opus Dei) founder," Tissier told The Associated Press.

She said she got paycheck each month, but was asked to sign blank checks by her employers and never saw the money.

She described being encouraged to keep her parents at bay, and being diagnosed with depression. A doctor, whom she said was an Opus Dei follower, put her on medication.

"I wasn't able to eat by myself, I couldn't even wash by myself, my head was hard to keep straight. Regardless of that, I still had the same workload in the Donson school," she said.

At age 29, she weighed just 39 kilograms (86 pounds). During a weekend visit to her parents' home, they took her to see their family doctor, who said she shouldn't go back.

"I started to live when I was 30. I started going out, I had never been to the movies," Tissier says.

She first filed a lawsuit in 2001 accusing Opus Dei of "mental manipulation." Those charges were later dismissed.

After a decade of investigation, two Opus Dei followers and the association that employed her are going on trial on charges of "clandestine work" and "remuneration contrary to dignity."

"This isn't a crusade against Opus Dei, that's not what's at stake," her lawyer Rodolphe Bosselut said. His client wants compensation and for Opus Dei to "review the status of the numerary assistant," a job he called "dysfunctional."

Thierry Laugier, a lawyer for ACUTE, the association that employed Tissier at the hotel, said the case revolves solely around an alleged breach of labor law.

Beatrice de la Coste, spokeswoman for Opus Dei in France, said, "Catherine Tessier was an employee at the hotel school, she was of course in contact with Opus Dei and she chose that spiritual path."

As of 2005, Opus Dei had 4,000 numerary assistants, all women, whose full-time, paid jobs are to care for the Opus centers, doing laundry, cleaning and cooking for the numeraries and priests who live there, according to the book "Opus Dei: Secrets and Power Inside the Catholic Church," by John Allen.

Allen cites critics of the numerary assistants, who say they are recruited from poorer classes to do long hours of manual labor and are told it's a vocation from God to give up marrying or having children in order to serve Opus Dei.
